MUMBAI: The two leading Hindi GECs—Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Star Plus—are warming up to outsing each other with their upcoming music reality shows. While SET is ready to launch the ninth edition of ‘Indian Idol’ next weekend, Star Plus is coming up with the new property ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ on the first Saturday of 2017.

Launching on 24 December, ‘Indian Idol 9’ will air every Saturday–Sunday at 8 pm. SET has a two-week head start to establish its hold among viewers, as Star Plus’s new show, which is scheduled to air every Saturday–Sunday at 8 pm, will launch two weeks later, on 7 January 2017. Given the same time slot, both the GECs will battle it out to garner more eyeballs.

This should not only give ‘Indian Idol’ the early-starter’s benefit but also an established fan base. The sixth season of ‘Indian Idol’ was aired in 2012, followed by two successful seasons of ‘Indian Idol Junior’. Produced by Wizcraft International Entertainment, the show this year is going back to its basics and has brought back the previous judges—Sonu Nigam, Anu Malik and Farah Khan. The tagline is ‘Mauke Ki Dastak’.

Star Plus’s ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ has an opportunity to attract new viewers with the unique format of the show. Produced by Frames Productions, the show is said to be one of the grandest on TV with mega scale of production. While ‘Indian Idol’ with cater to all genres of music, ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ will only feature Bollywood songs. The show is opened for people from across the globe.

While ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ is open to all participants aged 5–50 years, ‘Indian Idol’ will only cater to budding singers from the age group of 16–50 years. Additionally, ‘Indian Idol’ will only allow solo singing, but there is no such restriction for participants in ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’. The Star Plus show will have Karan Johar, Shekhar Ravjiani, Shalmali Kholgade and Badshah on the judging panel.

‘Indian Idol’ is presented by Vivo, and is co-powered by KUV 100 and Quick Heal. Interestingly, ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ is also presented by Vivo. The auditions for both the shows are on. ‘Indian Idol’ will replace the ongoing show ‘Super Dance’ and ‘Dil Hai Hindustani’ will replace ‘MasterChef India 5’.
