General News SonyLIV bets big on linear channels, plans to take channel count to 120+

MUMBAI: Video on demand (VoD) SonyLIV is planning to take live TV channel count to 120+ in the near future. The platform has added 50+ live TV channels in the last three months across genres.

“We would be having approx 70 channels and hope to take this to 120+ in the near future. In the last three months, we have added 50+ live TV channels across news, regional, lifestyle, special interest, and niche genres,” SPNI business head digital Uday Sodhi told TelevisionPost.com.

Sodhi said that the ultimate aim is to take the number of linear channels to 150+. “We will keep adding based on the consumer response and consumption patterns,” he said.

Apart from SPNI network channels, the platform has also added a slew of third-party channels across genres like news, lifestyle, and regional. The SPNI channels are behind the paywall while most of the third party channels barring some like FTV are available for free.

The SPNI-owned live TV channels on the platform are Sony Entertainment Television (SET), Sony Sab, Sony Max, Sony BBC Earth, Animax, Sony WAH, Sony Marathi, Sony Mix, Sony Pix, AXN, Sony Yay!, Sony Pal, Sony Aath, Sony TEN 2, Sony Six, Sony ESPN, Sony TEN 1, and Sony TEN 3. The platform also has a special channel called LIV Crime.

The third party channels on the platform include Travelxp, The Q India, Travelxp Tamil, Aaj Tak, Republic TV, Tez, Dilli Aaj Tak, India Today, News Nation, IBC 24, BTVI, BloombergQuint, Makkal TV, EPIC, Midnight Secrets, Boogle Bollywood, Aamar Cinema, Food Food, Chardikla Time TV, Krishna Vani, Eurochannel, FashionTV Global, and FashionTV L’Original.

Sodhi further stated that the platform is adding more and more linear channels every week with a special focus on news, language, and niche genres. “The idea is to make it a complete offering led by news. News is a big genre where we are not present. Besides news, we are also focussing on niche areas like food, travel. There are entertainment channels from languages that we are adding,” he stated.

He also said that the platform’s initial experience with linear channels has been good. Most of the live channels are non-exclusive to SonyLIV. “We expect 20% of the base to consume linear channels. News is a large and growing category. Language entertainment is also a big category for OTT consumers,” he noted.
