MUMBAI: English GEC Star World is fine-tuning its programming strategy with the aim of building appointment viewing. The content initiatives involve genre and slot based programming. The objective is to satiate the need of the viewers for the right kind of content depending on the time slot.

It has identified 7 pm as a slot to build upon on weekdays and will use comedy as the content theme for the time slot. The idea behind having comedy in this time slot is that after work pressure and a lot of household chores the viewers need to unwind. There will be two hours of non-stop comedy from 7 pm. As part of this offering, Star World will air four back to back episodes of ‘Modern Family’ every day from Monday to Friday, 7 pm onwards. Then the series ‘How I Met Your Mother’ joins this segment from July.

At 9 pm, the channel will air the talk show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ The channel said that 9 pm is an apt time to catch up with global banter and trends from around the world. Hence, the channel is introducing content for all ages with this talk show that it said exudes comedy, celebrity sightings, trending topics from around the world across politics, entertainment and more.

After that, the channel gets into the serious mode with ‘Stage’ a one hour slot at 10 pm dedicated to dramas. This will run from Monday to Friday. The action starts with sci-fi show ‘The Passage’ that will premiere on the channel on 3rd June. The show will be followed by comedy-drama series ‘Succession’ beginning 17th June starring Brian Cox in the lead. The series is about a media mogul, his dynasty and family. In July, the slot will host Bruce Lee’s series ‘Warrior’ on 1st July, followed by season three of the anthology series from HBO ‘True Detective’ on 15th July.

To culminate the offerings of the day, Star World then airs satirical, Emmy award-winning and record-breaking series ‘Veep’. This political comedy stars record-breaking Emmy award-winning actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus and follows her life as Selena Meyer, a self-obsessed and vapid vice-president as she tries to prevent various political uproars and juggles her public and private life. Seasons 1 to 7 of the series premiere from 3rd June onwards at 11 pm Monday to Friday. ‘Silicon Valley’ follows with seasons 1 – 5 from 17th July.

To aggregate viewership during the weekend, the broadcaster has a slot in the prime-time called Crime-Time on Saturday from 8-11 pm. With three back-to-back episodes of shows consisting of action-packed, suspense-filled crime dramas. These include the second season of Ryan Murphy’s procedural drama series ‘9-1-1’, the James Spader-starrer ‘Blacklist’ season six and season 13 of the longest running crime series, ‘Criminal Minds’.

On Sundays, the broadcaster will air the seventh season of ‘MasterChef Junior’ at 9 pm. Then in July, Star World introduces a special slot – ‘Documentaries’ at 9 pm aimed at inspiring and revealing real-life stories ranging from Warren Buffet, Steven Spielberg, Ralph Lauren, Robin Williams and more.
