MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) will for the first time broadcast on Doordarshan following a partnership between official rights holder Star India and public broadcaster Prasar Bharati.

As per the partnership, DD will get to air one IPL match a week every Sunday with a 1-hour delay. The ad revenue generated through the broadcast will be shared equally in 50:50 ratio between Star and DD.

“To bring Vivo IPL 2018 to a wider audience STAR TV has agreed to share with Prasar Bharati select matches on a one hour deferred live basis with 50-50 revenue sharing,” Prasar Bharati posted on its Twitter account.

Being a city-based franchise league, the IPL doesn’t come under the ambit of the Sports Broadcasting Act 2007 which mandates rights owners to share live feed of sporting events of national importance with the public broadcaster.

The move will not have any impact on the IPL’s TV economics as only one game will be aired on DD and that too with a one-hour delay.

Star India chairman and CEO Uday Shankar noted that the broadcaster has done a deal with the public broadcaster even though IPL is not an event of national importance. He further stated that the partnership with DD will allow higher sampling for the IPL.

“We said that we will give a delayed feed of 60 minutes of one match a week every Sunday. It is not that feed is being shared. That is what happens for the BCCI games under the mandatory sharing act where live streaming gets shared simultaneously. That is not what is happening with the IPL. With the IPL we are providing sampling opportunities of the event to people who don’t have access to pay TV. If we were not comfortable with it then we would not have done it,” Shankar told reporters here.

While it was not averse to sharing some IPL content with DD, Star was sure that it will not do live sharing with the pubcaster. Such a move would have disastrous implications for Star, which has paid Rs 16,347.5 crore to secure the IPL media rights till 2022.

“Our big thing was there can be no live sharing. We told them that if they wanted we could give highlights of some matches and a few matches just for people to experience who don’t subscribe to pay TV. It is good for the IPL if new audiences get to sample it,” he noted.

Shankar said he is not against the public broadcaster. He cited the example of Star Plus show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ which was voluntarily shared with DD.

“Our position was very clear. If it happens at all, then it has to be in the nature of a request from Prasar Bharti. In the past also when we did shows like ‘Satyamev Jayate’ we have voluntarily shared it with Doordarshan. I am not one of those who doesn’t believe in the existence of Prasar Bharti and public broadcasting,” Shankar averred.

It is pertinent to note that the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has been looking to bring IPL under the ambit of events of national importance. It had sought the opinion of the sports ministry on the matter.
