General News TRAI is working on proposal for online registration of LCOs

MUMBAI: In order to simplify the process, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is working on a proposal for online registration of local cable operators (LCOs) through post offices. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has conveyed this to a group of LCOs, who were complaining that renewal of their registration from the post offices was taking time. In this regard, some LCOs wanted registration to be issued for 5 to 10 years. Besides, the MIB has advised the LCOs to apply immediately for grant of registration in case they wanted to become multi-system operators (MSOs). In fact, the ministry recently published a print advertisement advising LCOs to apply before 30 April 2016 in order to be digital ready. “LCOs form an important constituent of the cable industry and digitisation of cable TV networks cannot be completed without their involvement and active participation,” said an MIB official. The government has mandated the sunset of analogue cable TV networks by 31 December 2016 in Phase IV areas. With this, the entire country would have digital cable TV networks from 1 January 2017. The ministry was meeting the LCO sub-group constituted for implementation of DAS for the first time. While two meetings with the sub-group were scheduled last year, they could not be held for want of quorum. Welcoming the representatives of LCO associations, the MIB official said that the sub-group has been constituted so that the issues and concerns of LCOs in the country could be discussed in the meetings of this forum.
