General News This is the Samsung Galaxy S8: Launch date, price, specifications revealed.

There seems to be no stopping the Samsung Galaxy S8 leaks. A new report confirms that the flagship device will be unveiled on March 29, and it will eventually go on sale in select countries on April 21. We are also being treated to the first-ever alleged live photos of the smartphone, which leave little to imagination.

Let’s start off with the design, and the back looks quite similar to last year’s Galaxy S7. The only difference though is the fingerprint sensor, which is now placed on the right of the camera lens. The front however is completely different, and it is dominated by the display, which is curved like the Galaxy S7 edge. But the big difference here is the absence of the physical home button. Even the Samsung logo seems to be missing at the front, and the overall effect is of a bezel-less front panel.

In line with the massive leak earlier this week, the VentureBeat report confirms that the Galaxy S8 will be launched in two variants — 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch. Both variants will feature dual curved-edge display with an unusual aspect ratio — 18.5:9. Samsung is calling it ‘infinity display’. Like Apple’s recent iPhones, the upcoming Galaxy S8 too will boast force touch capabilities. According to the report, the “lower part of the display supposedly capable of distinguishing between different types of screen presses.”

Samsung Galaxy S8 specifications, features
The rest of the specifications and features remain largely in line with previous leaks. So depending upon the region, the Galaxy S8 will either be powered by an Exynos 8895 chipset paired with Mali-G71 GPU, or Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 SoC. The amount of RAM however will remain the same as last year’s smartphones — 4GB.

The base storage variant will be 64GB, and there will also be a microSD card slot to expand storage up to 256GB. As for battery, unlike what was reported before, the two variants will be backed by a 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh units respectively. While there will be a USB Type-C port for rapid charging, one of the talking points will no doubt be how the company is retaining the 3.5mm audio jack.

For photography, rumors time and again hinted at a dual-camera setup at the back. But according to this new report, Samsung will retain the 12-megapixel camera at the back with f/1.7 aperture. But there will be improvements to the resolution. Up front, the upcoming smartphone will come with a new 8-megapixel selfie snapper, and if earlier reports are to be believed, it will boast auto-focus capabilities and an iris scanner.

Among the highlight features of the Galaxy S8 will be the AI assistant dubbed Bixby, and a Continuum-like desktop feature. The smartphone is expected to feature a dedicated button on the side that will fire up Bixby, which will be deeply integrated with Samsung’s native apps and is also way more powerful than S Voice. A recent leak also suggested that the AI could come with the ability to do a visual search for objects identified in a photograph and also leverage Optical character recognition (OCR) to recognize text, images or identify objects.

For the other feature, the Galaxy S8 is likely to be accompanied by a dock called DeX. this will allow you to use the Galaxy S8 as a desktop by connecting it to a monitor and keyboard. The overall effect is expected to be very similar to Microsoft Window’s Continuum feature.

Samsung Galaxy S8 price
According to the report, the Galaxy S8 will be more expensive than the Galaxy S7. The 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 variant is likely to be priced at €799 (Rs 58,100 approximately), while the 6.2-inch variant will retail at €899 (Rs 65,400 approximately). To put these prices into perspective, last year, the Galaxy S7 was launched for Rs 48,900, while the Galaxy S7 edge was launched for Rs 56,900. Both variants will reportedly go on sale in select countries from April 21.
