General News Top 5 Smartphones under Rs 20,000

The segment under Rs 20,000 is today one of the most important for handset manufacturers. This price range usually falls under mid-range category and you don’t need to compromise with any of the specifications. With a series of smartphones getting launched every other day, and if you have a budget of up to Rs 20,000, then you have plenty of options to choose from a range of smartphones with decent features and good looking design.

To make things simpler for you, here we present to you a list of five smartphones that can be purchased for under Rs 20,000 with features that offer good performance, camera quality and overall performance. After due diligence, we have carefully selected five smartphones on the basis of their features. The common element in all the five smartphones shortlisted is that they have Android Marshmallow operating system and 5.5 inch full HD display.

Moto M

The Moto M was launched in India recently at Rs 15,999 and Rs 17,999 for 32GB and 64GB internal storage variants respectively. The device features a unibody metal design and comes in Gold, Grey and Silver colour options.

As far as specifications go, Moto M comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) Super AMOLED display. Running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, Moto M is powered by an Octa-Core 2.2 GHz MediaTek Helio P15 CPU coupled with Mali-T860 MP2 GPU. For the memory, the device comes in two variants - 3GB RAM with 32GB of internal storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB of internal storage which will be further expandable up to 128GB via microSD. Unlike the other Moto devices, the Moto M will feature a fingerprint scanner at the back.

For photography, the smartphone houses a 16-megapixel primary camera with dual-tone LED flash, PDA, 1µm pixel size, full HD video recording, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection and Auto-HDR paired with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. For the juice, the device will be powered by a 3050 mAh Li-ion battery which will support fast charging technology. Connectivity features of the device include dual sim 4G, VoLTE, GPS capability, Bluetooth NFC, USB Type-C. The device measures at 151.35 X 75.35 X 7.85mm and weighs at 163 grams.

Lenovo P2
Lenovo launched its big battery smartphone - Lenovo P2 in India last month. The smartphone comes in two variants, 3GB RAM which is priced at Rs 16,999 and 4GB RAM which costs you Rs 17,999.


The Lenovo P2 has a 5.5-inch full HD (1920 x 1080p) AMOLED display with 401ppi as pixel density. It is armed with a 2.0 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. It comes in 3GB/4GB RAM with 32GB internal storage and 128 GB expandable memory via a micro SD card in India.

The smartphone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system and is backed by a huge non-removable 5,100 mAh Li-ion battery which claims to offer 3 days of battery back up. Lenovo P2 works with a 24W Rapid Charger that gives up to 10 hrs of battery life in 15 minutes.

The Lenovo P2 has a 13-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash on the back and a 5-megapixel camera on its front panel. It also has a fingerprint sensor. The handset measures 153 x 76 x 8.2mm and weighs 179 grams. The connectivity options include 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM Radio.

Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime
Samsung had launched Samsung J7 Prime last year at a price tag of Rs 18,790. The smartphone has got a price cut now of Rs 1,890 and is now be available at Rs 16,900.


The Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime has a metal body and a 5.5-inch 2.5D glass display that comes with 1920x1080 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass 4. It is powered by a 1.6 GHz octa-core processor, which is paired with 3GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. An expandable storage slot is there for a micro SD card of up-to 256 GB capacity. The smartphone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system and also offers a fingerprint scanner, which is integrated on the home button. Samsung J7 Prime has S Power planning and S Secure features. The S Power planning mode extends battery life and the S Secure feature allow users to hide and lock applications, secure WiFi and create a separate Secure folder for images and applications.

The Galaxy J7 Prime has a 3300 mAh battery and comes with S Bike mode. To activate S Bike mode, all you have to do is attach an NFC tag, which comes bundled with the phone, with your bike (like on the petrol tank). Just before getting on your bike, the user just needs to tap the phone with the NFC tag that will turn on the S Bike mode. Once activated, callers will hear a message that the person is riding and they can leave messages.

The smartphone offers a 13-megapixel rear camera. There is an LED flash in the back panel as well. The rear camera has f/1.9 aperture. For selfies and video calls, the phone offers an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with aperture f/1.9 and wide angle lens. Further, the smartphone offers Dual SIM, 4G, WiFi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.1, GPS/Glonass, and a micro USB port. The handset measures 151.7 x 75.0 x 8.0mm and weighs 167 grams.

Coolpad Note 5

Coolpad launched its Coolpad Note 5 smartphone in India last year. The smartphone is retailing at Rs 10,999 and is available in black and gold colours. The phone is exclusively available on Amazon India.


Coolpad Note 5 has a metal unibody and a 5.5-inch display that comes with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (full HD). It has the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor which is paired with Adreno 405 GPU GPU, 4GB RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The phone can hold a micro SD card of up to 64GB. The Note 5 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system and has a customised user interface - Cool UI 8.0. Most importantly, it has a huge 4010 mAh battery. The smartphone also comes with dual-system (dual space feature) feature, same as of older Coolpad Max, which allows its users to have two accounts on WhatsApp, Facebook, Line, BBM, and other social media applications on a single smartphone with a BiLogin feature and the phone has a multi-screen feature as well.

There is a 13-megapixel autofocus camera in its rear panel. This camera is accompanied by two LED flashlights. The camera has CMOS Sensor and f2/2 aperture. An 8-megapixel selfie camera with f2/2 aperture is in its front. The phone comes with a front LED flashlight as well to help users take selfies in low light conditions. The Coolpad Note 5 also has a fingerprint scanner, which is placed on its back panel, and as per the company, it is quite fast and can unlock the phone in just 0.5 seconds. The handset comes with hybrid dual SIM and support for a 4G network with VoLTE. Besides, the smartphone offers WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, USB OTG, Geomagnetic Sensor Proximity Sensor, and Light Sensor. The handset measures 152*75.7*8.85mm and weighs 173.4 grams.


Huawei Honor 6X

Earlier, this year Huawei launched the Honor 6X smartphone with dual-camera set up for Rs 12,999 for the 3GB RAM variant and Rs 15,999 for 4GB RAM variant. The smartphone was first unveiled in China last year and was also recently made available in the United States. The device comes in two variants, a 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage and a 4GB RAM + 64GB variants and is available exclusively via Amazon India.


The main highlight of the device is the dual-camera setup at the back. The device features a combination of a 12-megapixel sensor and a 2-megapixel sensor. The set up comes with phase detection autofocus (PDAF), LED flash etc. At the front, there is an 8-megapxel sensor for selfies. The rear camera setup on the Honor 6X is more like the one we saw in HTC One M8. The set up lets you dig into and play with shallow depth of field and one can change the focus of an image post clicking it.

As far as other specifications are concerned, Honor 6X runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with EMUI v4.1 on top. Other than that, it comes with a 5.5-inch (1080x1920 pixels) full-HD IPS display with 2.5D curved glass protection. On the inside, the device is powered by a Kirin 655 octa-core (4 cores at 2.1GHz + 4 cores at 1.7GHz) chipset with Mali-T830MP2 GPU paired with 3GB RAM + 32GB internal storage or 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage. In both the cases, the internal storage is expandable via microSD card. There is 3340 mAh battery inside and the smartphone also offers 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS, Compass etc.

Some of the other smartphones which were considered but could not make it to the top 5 list were Samsung Galaxy On Nxt, Lenovo Z2 Plus, Moto X Play, Moto G4 Plus, Oppo F1s, Asus Zenfone 3 Max, Gionee S6S, Lenovo K6 Note and LeEco Le Max 2.
