Hubballi: The twin cities got their first free Wi-Fi hotspot at the Old Bus Stand on Thursday with the launch of a BSNL-provided service set up through the MP Land Area Development Fund. Another hotspot will be launched in Akshay Colony Circle on Friday.

About Rs 4 lakh has been spent to set up a single hotspot and there is a proposal to inaugurate the same service at Rani Chennamma Circle in Hubballi, and Jubilee Circle, KCD Campus, Saptapur Bhavi Stop and Jayanagar Cross in Dharwad. The Old Bus Stop has four access points with each having the capability to support 300-400 users at a time in the 100-m radius. Each user can get a speed of up to 4mbps with 200 MB of download per day.

As part of the Digital Hubballi-Dharwad plan, the aim is to have Wi-Fi hotspots in 67 wards of the twin cities. These hotspots will be set up under the MP Land Area Development Fund and with BSNL providing the service with technological help from QuadGen Technologies. "If Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation comes forward to share the expenses to install Wi-Fi hotspots, free internet service would be provided in all the 67 wards of Hubballi-Dharwad," said MP Pralhad Joshi.

BSNL Dharwad telecom district general manager Vivek Jaiswal said, "Free Wi-Fi service at prominent public locations is an integral part of Smart Cities and a step towards implementing digital democracy and Digital India," Jaiswal said.

Mayor Manjula Akkur, deputy mayor Laxmi Uppar and BSNL senior officers were present on the occasion.

Traffic chaos

The launch programme at Old Bus Stop was scheduled at 11.15 am, but delayed by nearly 45 minutes due to the late arrival of Joshi. Due to a large gathering at the venue, passengers traveling to KIMS, Vidyanagar, Dharwad and other places faced great inconvenience. The haphazard parking of vehicles belonging to corporators, politicians and other attendees created chaos at the spot. Buses faced difficulties to enter the bus terminus. Police and staff of NWKRTC struggled to streamline traffic movement.
