With Facebook going big on videos, particularly 360-degree videos and virtual reality, rival Twitter is also stepping up its game with a new feature that allows one to broadcast 360-degree videos on the micro-blogging platform. Although, all users can watch live 360-degree videos, only select partners can go live in 360-degree through Periscope as of now. Twitter says the feature will be available to more partners in the near future.

“With 360 video on Periscope, you can experience moments with the broadcaster and take a look around – it’s one step closer to actually being there. Starting today, you’ll be able to join live 360 videos on Periscope and Twitter from some incredible broadcasters – getting front-row access at exclusive events, traveling to places across the globe, and getting up close with well-known personalities.” the Periscope team said in a blog post. Those who want to get the feature can join the waitlist here.

The first 360-degree video published on Periscope was from broadcaster Alex Pettitt, showing a Florida sunset. The 360-degree video on Twitter is very similar to Facebook’s. Users can spot the 360-degree videos on Twitter and Periscope through a dedicated “360″ badge on such videos. If you are a desktop user, you can click and drag around on the screen to see the video. If you are viewing the video on mobile on mobile, you can tilt your phone in different angles to travel around the video.

Twitter’s latest feature comes shortly after Facebook also introduced support for live videos in 360-degree format. Called “Live 360″, the feature allows users to broadcast videos live in 360-degree. Like Twitter, Facebook’s live 360-degree videos feature hasn’t seen a wide rollout, and is currently limited to certain partners. Though, the social networking giant has promised to make the Live API available to more pages in the coming months whereas a wide release of the feature is expected to happen sometime in next year.

Besides Facebook and Twitter, Google‘s video sharing platform YouTube has already joined the bandwagon. While YouTube supported the format for viewing for quite some time, the ability to broadcast was added this year. YouTube also lets users live broadcast content in 3D.

Addition of live 360-degree videos across all major social networking platforms is likely to provide a big push to the virtual reality segment, which was one of the hot trends this year. With wider availability of affordable hardware and cross-platform compatibility, the virtual reality is expected to grow even bigger in 2017.
