General News Twitter testing 280-character limit for tweets and the internet is furious

Twitter’s character limit has long been a topic of debate. While some argue the essence of tweets being short and crisp, others wish for just a few more characters. Last September, Twitter relaxed its 140-character limit by excluding media files and usernames from the count. Now, Twitter could be doubling its character limit to a whopping 280, as it understands people “trying to cram your thoughts into a tweet”.

Twitter has a good reason for this though, and it depends on which language you tweet in. Giving an example of how in languages like Japanese, Korean, and Chinese you can express more feelings and emotions in just one word. This way, people who tweet in Japanese, Korean, or Chinese can mostly sum up their thoughts within 140 characters or less. Twitter is now testing the 280 character with a small group, and for all languages except the above three.

Based on their findings, Twitter will decide whether to introduce 280 characters for longer tweets now. The micro-blogging site clarifies that it still stands for brevity and understands those who have “an emotional attachment to 140 characters”. But it doesn’t seem very sympathetic, and has already fallen in love “with this new, still brief, constraint”.

Twitter’s new decision has surely garnered enough attention to cause different responses from its users. Here’s what Twitteratis have to say about tweeting in 280 characters.
