General News Veteran Actor Vinod Khanna Dies at 70 After Battle With Cancer

New Delhi: Veteran actor and sitting BJP MP Vinod Khanna passed away at the age of 70 on Thursday after a difficult battle with cancer.

The actor, who was part of several Bollywood hits like Amar Akbar Anthony and The Burning Train, was admitted to the HN Reliance Foundation and Research Centre in Girgaon, Mumbai recently.

A statement from the hospital said: “Veteran actor and Member of Parliament Mr. Vinod Khanna, who was admitted to the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital breathed his last at 11.20 am due to advanced bladder carcinoma.”

A photo of the actor in which he looked frail and a shadow of his former self had shocked his fans and many in the film fraternity.

Vinod Khanna, a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gurdaspur district of Punjab, was born on 6 October, 1946. He was seen in 141 films between 1968 and 2013.

Khanna was seen in lead roles in several popular films, including Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Gaddaar, Jail Yatra, Imitihaan, Inkaar, Kuchhe Dhaage, Amar Akbar Anthony, Rajput, Qurbani, Kudrat, Dayavan, Kaarnama, Suryaa: An Awakening and Jurm.

Vinod Khanna made his debut in 1968 with Man Ka Meet. He went on to win numerous awards, including the Filmfare award for best supporting actor for Haath ki Safaai and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.

In 1982, at the peak of his film career, Khanna decided to quit the film industry briefly to follow his spiritual guru Osho Rajneesh.

After a five-year hiatus, he returned to the Hindi film industry to give hit films Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate.
Khanna joined politics in 1997 and got elected from Gurdaspur on a BJP ticket in the next year's Lok Sabha poll. Later, during the time of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government he became Union minister for culture and tourism in 2002. Later, he became a minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs. Khanna lost the 2009 election, but was elected again from Gurdaspur in 2014.

Condoling the actor's demise, the team of Baahubali decided to put off the premier of the movie's sequel which was scheduled for Thursday night.
