General News Vodafone offers 10 GB data at 1GB rate for new 4G handset users, but there's a catch

NEW DELHI: Vodafone India on Monday said that its prepaid and postpaid customers with a new 4G smartphone will now be able to avail 10 GB of data at the price of 1GB 3G or 4G data, which will be valid up to 3 months. The move follows Bharti Airtel's recent launch of a special 4G data pack that matched Reliance Jio Infocomm's data rates, effectively offering 1GB of high-speed data for Rs 50.

Vodafone had earlier slashed effective data rates of its 4G, 3G big internet packs for pre-paid customers offering upto 67% more benefits for the same price, tracking a similar move by rivals Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular.

Customers in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata can avail the offer by recharging with Rs 250 and above packs, and can use the data anytime during the day. However, subscribers in the country's 3G circles can only use the free data in night from 12 AM till 6 AM, even as having a 4G phone is mandatory for them to avail the offer.

In addition to data benefits, Vodafone customers will get free subscription to Vodafone Play service, which offers over 100 Live TV channels, over 18000 movies and TV show titles and a wide range of all genres of music, in partnership with Hungama Play and HOOQ.

The telco said that the additional data provided on these packs will make the Internet more affordable for customers who use mobile internet in a limited way and encourage first time users to come online. It added that the additional data will also enable existing users of data enjoy their mobile internet experience further by staying online longer and accessing more of their favorite content.

"With the festive season approaching, we are giving a greater reason to customers to upgrade to 4G handsets. With this offer, we are encouraging new 4G handset users to enjoy the Vodafone SuperNet experience to the fullest and explore the wonders of the internet in a truly worry-free manner," Sandeep Kataria, Director - Commercial, Vodafone India, said in a statement.

The country's second largest telco said that it is educating current and potential users about how internet can add significant value to them. The telco said that it is also building content partnerships, simplifying pricing, educating retailers and offering choice to customer basis their interests and consumption patterns.
