The Volvo S90 could become the first Volvo car in India with activated radar based tech

Volvo is gearing up to launch the new S90 sedan in India, and with the launch of the new car, Volvo is also planning to bring its radar based safety tech to India. Volvo cannot currently sell cars in India with their radar based systems active, as the frequency they operate were regulated by TRAI(Telecom Regulatory Authority of India).

Volvo is currently in talks with the Indian government and are confident to get approval to use the 36-38 MHz, 433-434.79 MHz, 302-351 kHz and 76-77 GHz frequencies for their radar based safety tech. The frequencies were deregulated by the government in September 2015 for use by automobile manufacturers.

Currently, the XC90 sold in India is fitted with the radar based safety tech hardware, but it has been deactivated by the Swedish manufacturer to comply with government norms. Once Volvo gets the go ahead, XC90 owners will be able get these systems activated via a software update.

Volvo's radar based security systems include City Safety, a co-pilot system that detects obstructions in the way and brakes automatically if a collision is imminent. Pedestrians, Cyclists, cars at intersections, you name it and the Volvo will stop. Another set of features that use radar based technology is Intellisafe. This is the system that works to actively avoid an accident and includes features like Adaptive Cruise Control. At speeds less than 50kmph Pilot Assist technology works alongside the Adaptive Cruise Control to keep you in your lane with gentle steering inputs, should you deviate.

A Blind Spot Information system makes for easy manoeuvrability when changing lanes even in traffic conditions. A 360 degree Surround View technology system gives you a bird's-eye view of your car in its immediate surroundings. This allows for easy manoeuvrability in tight spaces making parking simple.
