Kolkata: The West Bengal government will lay an underground cable TV network in Kolkata to decongest the city of overhead cable wires.

The laying has been done in New Town and work will start soon in Bidhannagar. “In Kolkata we will soon start a pilot project for underground laying of cable TV lines,” West Bengal urban development minister Firhad Hakim said at the inauguration of ‘Cable TV Show’.

Hakim said that the move is part of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s beautification plan for the city. The underground laying of wire would also give jobs to many unemployed youth in the city, he stated.

According to Cable TV Equipment Traders & Manufacturers Association (CTMA) secretary KK Binani, the move would minimise chances of any outside disturbances in connectivity as sometimes wires get damaged during cyclones, felling of trees and other similar instances.

Binani also demanded a lower licence fee for small cable TV operators. “There is a flat rate of Rs 1 lakh for whether I want licence for all over India or one small town. This is in favour of bigger players. We want smaller fees for those who want licence for smaller places,” he said.
