General News WhatsApp to soon let you pin up to three chats; here’s how it works

Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp has been frequently updated with some minor and major changes to improve the user experience. While the overall look and feel have remained unadulterated, there have been quite a few additions such as Snapchat-like Stories, scribble over photos and improved Siri integration among others. In what appears to be the continuation of improving user experience efforts, WhatsApp will soon let you pin three chats on top.

The feature has been spotted by AndroidPolice in the beta build v2.17.162/3 of the messaging app. The publication says the feature appears as a new icon in the action bar, which is placed next to the functions such as delete, mute, and archive. After having pinned the message, the chat stays in the top, even though it’s not the most recent chat. At the moment, users can only pin three chats. If trying to pin another chat, WhatsApp will show you the notification stating “you can’t pin more.” However, users can always unpin one chat, and add another.

The new feature is certainly going to make the experience better on WhatsApp, though the option to pin just three chats could put off some avid WhatsApp users who are actively messaging in multiple (more than three) groups or contacts. The new feature, however, appears to be an extension of favorite message feature that was launched two years ago. The favorite message feature allowed users to mark messages as the favorite so that they can refer to those messages at a later time.

Do note that it’s not necessary that all of the features tested in the beta builds become part of the end product. Though, the pin message feature is certainly going to be a welcome addition.

As said earlier, WhatsApp has of late added quite a few nifty features and some are in the works. One of the recent updates to the platform was the deeper integration with Apple’s Siri digital assistant. The update allowed WhatsApp for iOS users to ask Siri to read their WhatsApp messages. With iOS 10 being more open to third party developers, Siri was already able to send messages through WhatsApp through voice commands.

Some of the new features that have been spotted in beta versions are the ability to unsend messages, live location sharing and send multiple contacts at once. WhatsApp is also working on to include digital payments within the app.
