London: Indian tennis ace Leander Paes and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis continued their rich vein of form as they advanced to the third round of the mixed doubles event here at Wimbledon with a comfortable victory.

The defending champions recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over New Zealand-German pair of Artem Sitak and Laura Siegemund in the second round contest that lasted for one hour and 16 minutes at the All England Club.

The 16th-seeded Indo-Swiss pair could face a tricky encounter next as they are likely to meet second seeds Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina in the third round.

Paes and Hingis won the French Open mixed doubles title last month and are also the defending champions at the US Open.

In another match, Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova overcame Philippines` Treat Huey and Alicja Rosolska of Poland 6-3, 7-5 to reach the third round.

New Delhi: In a major upset, defending champions Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were stunned by the pair of Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova in the Wimbledon 2016 women’s doubles quarters on Thursday.

Top seeds committed too many unforced errors which cost them dearly. After losing the first set 2-6, Indo-Swiss pair did fight back but Babos-Shvedova gave their best shot to win the next set 6-4.

Mirza-Hingis broke serve, and then consolidated the hold in the second set with a nice hold but two breaks in opponent’s kitty were too much to make up for towards the fag end of the set.

It's a disappointing outing for Indian tennis ace Mirza at the Wimbledon as she and her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig had made an early exit after losing their mixed doubles second round encounter in straight sets.

The fifth seeded Hungarian and Kazakhstani pair will next face tenth seeded United States` pairing of Raquel Atawo and Abigail Spears in the semi-finals.

Leander Paes, Martina Hingis knocked out of Wimbledon by first timers

London: Defending mixed doubles champions Leander Paes and Martina Hingis were knocked out of Wimbledon on Thursday by Britain`s Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen of Finland who were playing their first match together.

Indian veteran Paes and Swiss star Hingis had completed the mixed doubles Grand Slam at the French Open last month after they had captured the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles in 2015.

But they were undone by Watson and Kontinen who were playing together for the first time in three sets, 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Watson and Kontinen had reached the third round without hitting a ball after Louisa Chirico and Denis Kudla had given them a walkover before Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina did the same in round two.

"We were warming up and getting ready each day and we were always put on at the end of the day, so we`ve literally just been ready to play for each match and they`ve told us last minute," said Watson.

"I think today in the first set we were finding our ground, getting comfortable with each other, and then we kind of took off, especially in that third set."

Watson and Kontinen will face Scott Lipsky of the United States and Russian Alla Kudryavtseva in the quarter-finals.

It was a miserable day for Hingis as she and Indian partner Sania Mirza lost their women`s doubles title, losing 6-2, 6-4 to Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova on the semi-finals.

The fifth seeds will face 10th seeds Raquel Atawo and Abigail Spears, who beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke 6-4, 6-2.

Wimbledon 2016: Serena Williams beats Angelique Kerber to equal Steffi Graf's record 22 Grand Slam titles

New Delhi: Serena Williams finally equaled Steffi Graf's long-standing Open Era record of winning 22 Grand Slam singles titles after defeating Angelique Kerber in the final of 2016 Wimbledon women's singles final on Saturday.

Serena, 34, won the match 7-5, 6-3 in one hour 23 minutes, in front of a packed Centre Court crowd at All England Club. The world number one's history making feat came some time to come, after she lost the finals the Australian Open and French Open finals early this year, and also the semi-finals of 2015 US Open.

The US Open melt-down last year had denied Serena a calendar Grand Slam.

This marked her seventh Wimbledon title in nine finals, and 12th in the family with her elder sister – who lost to Kerber in the semis – already collecting the Venus Rosewater Dish five times. Serena had previously won the Wimbledon titles in 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2015.

The defending champion lost the very first point of the match, but soon started playing her flowing tennis coupled with powerful serves.

But the first break in the first set came late with both players holding their respective serves. Kerber, despite playing his first Wimbledon final, managed to hold on for majority of the set, until that decisive 13th game.

Serena reeled off eight aces against Kerber's none, and won 54% of total points with one break point conversion from five chances.

The second game, however, proved lot easier for Serena fired as many as 13 aces, and once again, against Kerber's none. And despite committing three double faults, Serena managed to raced away to 5-3.

And she started the ninth game with three unplayable serves, and won the title with an easy overhead volley on Kerber's left court.

Today's win also helped Serena avenged her final lost to the German in their first meeting after the Aus Open summit clash in January.

In her way to 28th singles final in Slams, the American world number one dispatched Elena Vesnina in 48 minutes in quickest ever semi-final match.

For Kerber, she was bidding to become the first German woman to win Wimbledon since Graf in 1996.
