General News Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime vs Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 vs Motorola Moto E 4G (2015)

Xiaomi today launched its first ‘Made in India’ smartphone called the Redmi 2 Prime. Priced at Rs 6,999, the smartphone will be up against the likes of Micromax’s recently launched Canvas Xpress 2, and the Motorola Moto E 4G (2015) to name a few. We pit the three smartphones against each other in a comparison based on their price, specifications and features.

Not a lot differentiates the three smartphones in terms of the pricing. The Redmi 2 Prime and the Moto E 4G are both priced at Rs 6,999, while Micromax’s smartphone is priced a bit lower at Rs 5,999. As for availability, Xiaomi’s smartphone is the most widely available across as well as e-commerce sites like Flipkart, Amazon India, and Snapdeal. Micromax and Motorola’s smartphones, on the other hand, are Flipkart exclusives.

Motorola’s smartphone is at a disadvantage here sporting a qHD (960×540 pixels) resolution display, while the other two smartphones flaunt HD (1280×720 pixels) resolution displays. In terms of size, the Canvas Xpress 2 has the biggest screen at 5-inches, while the other two flaunt a 4.7-inch screen each.

As mentioned above, the Canvas Xpress 2 is currently the cheapest smartphone in India to be powered by an octa-core chipset. It features a 1.4GHz MediaTek MTK6592 octa-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM. The Redmi 2 Prime and the Moto E, on the other hand, are both powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core 64-bit processor. But where Motorola’s smartphone features 1GB of RAM, Xiaomi’s smartphone edges ahead with 2GB of RAM onboard.

The Redmi 2 Prime again edges ahead with 16GB internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 32GB using a microSD card. The other two smartphones offer 8GB onboard memory, along with a microSD card slot.

On paper, the Canvas Xpress 2 is far ahead of its rivals featuring a combination of 13-megapixel snapper at the back, supplemented by a 5-megapixel selfie camera. In comparison, the Redmi 2 Prime features an 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras, while the Moto E features a 5-megapixel and VGA cameras. Only the megapixels count however is no surety of superior performance, and we will wait till we have reviewed the smartphone to pass judgment.

The three smartphones feature almost similarly sized batteries. The Canvas Xpress 2 features the biggest battery at 2,500mAh, followed by the Moto E’s 2,390mAh, and the Redmi 2 Prime’s 2,200mAh battery.

The Canvas Xpress 2 misses out on 4G LTE support, something both the Redmi 2 Prime and Moto E boast. The rest of the connectivity options however remain the same — Dual-SIM, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

Here’s where the Moto E is at an advantage. It runs on a near stock Android Lollipop, and being a part of Motorola’s lineup is also one of the first smartphones to receive OS updates. Both the Redmi 2 Prime and the Canvas Xpress 2 still run on Android KiKat.

On paper, Xiaomi’s new Redmi 2 Prime seems to offer quite a tempting set of specifications, closely matched by the Micromax Canvas Xpress 2. The Redmi 2 was an impressive smartphone in its own right, only bogged down by its below-par performance. But the bump in specifications could hopefully have ironed out those issues, and we will wait to review the smartphone till we pass our judgement.

A detailed comparison table follows.:
