Xiaomi has today launched its much-teased ‘Desh ka Smartphone’, which is the Redmi 5A. The budget smartphone is priced from Rs 5,999 for the 2GB/16GB variant and Rs 6,999 for the 3GB/32GB variant, and is all set to go on sale from 7th December. The device will be available online through Flipkart and Mi.com/in, as well as all of Xiaomi’s offline stores and partners. A discount scheme currently being offered for the first five million customers of the Redmi 5A (2GB/16GB) will drop the price by Rs 1,000, for an effective price of Rs 4,999 on mi.com/in.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A was launched in China last month. As the name suggests, this is the successor to the Redmi 4A, which itself was launched in India earlier this year. As far as design is concerned, the Redmi 5A looks pretty much the same as its predecessor. The one big difference however is the metallic finish in place of the dull plastic-like looks of the 4A.
The overall design is pretty much a standard affair, and it looks very much a Xiaomi device. The front side is dominated by the display with capacitive buttons underneath. At the back is the camera module, LED flash, and the Mi logo and speaker grille towards the bottom. On the right side are the power button and volume rocker, while on the left are the SIM and microSD card slots.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A specifications, features
As far as specifications are concerned, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A sports a 5-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) display. Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core SoC paired with 2GB of RAM. There is 16GB of internal storage on offer, which can be further expanded up to 128GB using a microSD card. The higher variant features 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, and is priced at Rs 6,999.
For photography, the device is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera of f/2.2 aperture, and features like burst mode, HDR mode, and panorama mode among others. There is also an LED flash accompanying the camera. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel camera of f/2.0 aperture.
Making sure everything ticks is a 3,000mAh battery that is said to be good enough to last more than a day. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. On the software front, the device runs on Android Nougat-based MIUI 9.
