General News Yahoo Messenger to shut down after 20 years

#1

Yes, Yahoo Messenger is finally shutting down. The company announced today that it will be pulling the plug on its popular chat service on July 17, after which users won’t be able to access or sign in on Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo also stated that it is abandoning the service in pursuit of coming up with a better communication tool that fits the current trends of messenger applications.

In a Yahoo Help forum, the company posted, “We know we have many loyal fans who have used Yahoo Messenger since its beginning as one of the first chat apps of its kind. As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”

Yahoo Messenger was one of the first chat apps of its kind and has been around for almost 20 years. Though it was popular in the desktop community, the new wave of mobile chatting applications introduced by Facebook and Google seemed to have had a big toll on its user base in the last few years. While there is no replacement for Yahoo Messenger at the moment, the company does seem to be experimenting with an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel.

Yahoo Messenger users have six months to download their chat history to their computer or other devices. Further instructions can also be found on the company’s official webpage. Yahoo Messenger is the second messenger app owned by Oath that is shutting down. Prior to this, the company also discontinued its AOL Instant Messenger, which was also introduced 20 years ago.
