Google has made some new changes to the design of its popular video-streaming platform, YouTube. After the ‘dark mode’ was spotted last month in a leak, the company has officially announced its rollout. The team at YouTube is currently working on a “simple, consistent, and beautiful” design look aimed at offering a whole new desktop experience.

The new YouTube desktop version is currently available for preview to a limited number of users before it advances to a global rollout. Users can get a sneak peek of the new look here and switch to the regular view by selecting “Restore classic YouTube” from the account menu. The new intuitive design will be heavily based on Material Design concept accompanied with a lot of white space.

Google certainly loves Material Design, and it first made its way on Android Lollipop 5.0 OS. Since then, majority of apps have adopted Material Design concept. And while Google has revamped Gmail login panel design, the Material Design is missing from web versions of most of Google applications.

Alongside the refreshed design, Youtube now also gets a Dark Theme, which replaces all-white UI when the dark mode is turned on. Users can switch to Dark Theme from the new profile menu. The option can be accessed by clicking on the profile picture in the Youtube dashboard located at the top.

The new design is built on a faster framework called Polymer, which is a JavaScript library that helps developers create ‘reusable custom elements’. Youtube says the Polymer framework would allow ‘quicker feature development from here on out’. Brian Marquardt, Product Manager at Youtube said in a blog, “This is only the beginning—you can look forward to more powerful new features coming soon!”
