General News ZMCL plans to enter three regional markets in FY19
MUMBAI: Zee Media Corporation Ltd (ZMCL) is planning to expand its regional presence with the launch of three news channels in FY19. The company plans to launch news channels in Kannada and Telugu in addition to a channel focussed at Assam-North East.

“We plan to expand into regions where we are not present. We are not present in North East and South India. We plan to launch Kannada, Telugu and Assam-North East focussed news channels in FY19,” ZMCL CEO regional news Purushottam Vaishnava told

Vaishnava said that the company is on the drawing board to roll-out these channels in the current fiscal. “We are in the planning stage to launch these three news channels in the current financial year,” Vaishnava added.

He further stated that the company will also fill in the remaining gaps in the portfolio by entering Tamil and Malayalam markets. However, the timeline of the launch has not yet been decided.

“It’s not that we will not enter Tamil and Malayalam markets. We plan to have a presence across South. After Kannada and Telugu, these are the language markets that will be left for expansion,” he noted.

Outside South and Assam/North East, Vaishnava doesn’t see any more gaps in the regional portfolio. ZMCL has four national and eight regional channels in its portfolio.

In 2017, ZMCL had launched two regional channels Zee 24 Kalak (Gujarati) and Zee Uttar Pradesh/Uttarakhand. It had also launched an Urdu news channel, Zee Salaam.

“We are in a comfortable position as far as regional markets are concerned. In terms of viewership, most of our regional channels are either in number 1 or a solid number 2 position. We plan to maintain our leadership positions in key markets by growing our market share further,” Vaishnava stated.

ZMCL consolidated net profit for the quarter ended 31 December jumped 22.5% at Rs 12.19 crore compared to Rs 9.95 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

Operating revenue had jumped 44.8% to Rs 159.2 crore from Rs 109.9 crore. Ad revenue increased 46.5% to Rs 143.9 crore compared to Rs 98.24 crore. Subscription revenue increased 26.6% to Rs 11.74 crore from Rs 9.27 crore.
