MUMBAI: Zee Media Corporation Ltd’s (ZMCL) national Hindi news channel Zee News is set to turn free to air (FTA) on 8 June, the company’s distribution partner Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has informed cable TV operators.

According to a letter issued by ZEEL to affiliate partners, Zee News will be distributed as an FTA channel across all distribution platforms.

The company had issued a public notice in English and vernacular newspapers informing the public about the move.

With Zee News going FTA, ZMCL will have three FTA channels. Currently, India 24×7 and Zee Purvaiya, a Bihar-focused channel, are the only FTA channels.

Hindi news channels are turning FTA to tap into the large rural viewership. Earlier, NDTV India had gone FTA. TV18’s IBN7 will go FTA on or before 30 July.

As reported earlier by TelevisionPost.com, ZMCL’s channels will be distributed by sister company ZEEL.

Earlier, ZMCL had a distribution arrangement with Taj Television India, a wholly owned subsidiary of ZEEL. The company was paying 14% of its subscription revenue to Taj Television India.

As per the new deal, ZMCL will share 7% subscription revenue with ZEEL as commission for distributing its channels. ZMCL owns and operates 10 news channels in six different languages, attracting more than 119 million viewers.

It also owns English newspaper dna and digital properties like zeenews.com and dnaindia.com. The network comprises three national channels—Zee News (Hindi news), India 24X7 and Zee Business (Hindi business news).

It also runs regional news channels, namely Zee 24 Taas (Marathi), Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh (Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh), Zee Marudhara (Rajasthan), Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal and Zee Kalinga (Odisha).

Additionally, the company operates two regional news channels through its subsidiaries—24 Ghanta (Bengali) through Zee Akaash News and Zee Purvaiya (Bihar & Jharkhand) through Maurya TV Pvt Ltd.
