The better structured Contacts manager can now handle comprehensive details

As we were expecting, Google has given a slight facelift to the user interface of its mailing service - Gmail. Major changes are seen in the Contacts manager with keyboard shortcuts support and custom labels for phone numbers.

The new Gmail interface now clubs Mail, Contacts and Tasks together on the top left corner. You can hide the Contacts and Tasks option by clicking on the right edge of the Mail option. Compose Mail now appears as a button and not as a link. The header area has been skimmed so that first email appears high on the screen.

Contacts can now be sorted by First or Last name. While editing contact details, Gmail will now auto-save the changes made and you can also hit Undo for reversing the changes saved. Of course you can arrange the contacts Groups wise. If you wish to add new contacts to any group, hit Merge after selecting them. If you own Android based smartphone then the Group option will show you the contacts that have been starred in Android.

The individual Contact box is now more structured and you can add more information about the contact. One can add more details by clicking on the Add button besides basic information like email, phone, address, birthday and URL (Twitter, Facebook or any other link).

This facelift is available to Gmail users only and Google Apps users will have to wait for a while.
