NEW DELHI: The government is considering a new roadmap for taking new initiatives in the Prasar Bharati set up, said Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni.

The initiatives would aim to firm up the mandate given to Prasar Bharati as a public broadcaster, Soni added.

Admitting that the 40,000-odd employees of Prasar Bharati had been forced to face stagnation for many years, Soni also pledged to start afresh in 2011 to redress their grievances.

Speaking at a function where she and Prasar Bharati Chaierperson Mrinal Pande jointly released six sets of DVDs from the Archives of Doordarshan, the Minister said there was urgent need to centralise cataloguing, assimilation, preservation and restoration processes.

She said the method of disseminating archival information through popular mediums such as DVDs provided an entertaining tool and platform to ensure the continuity of cultures across different generations. Archiving of material ensured the preservation of heritage and legacy of the innate strength of India’s culture. This process ensured the release of content taken from archives in cataloguing, digitization, digital restoration, preservation and dissemination by monetizing content and making the material accessible to the common man.

Highlighting the National Archival Heritage Mission for the preservation, digitisation and restoration of archiving heritage available in various agencies in the country, the Minister said it was a project that would ensure preserving for prosperity. This mission was the most appropriate tool to ensure inter generational link across the country as far as cultural resources were concerned. With an outlay of Rs 6.6 billion, the heritage mission was expected to be ready by 2013, as part of the centenary celebrations of Indian Cinema.

The DVD titles that were released include the ‘Paintings of India’ series by renowned lensman Benoy K Behl, dances of path breaking dancer Padma Vibhushan Sonal Mansingh, Secrets of Shastras revealed by Gurus, the ‘Mind Watch’ series by renowned Dr Avdhesh Sharma and Dr Sujatha Sharma, Filigree of Rhythm on three tabla masters, and 125 Years of the Surabhi theatre tradition thriving in Andhra Pradesh.
