GUWAHATI: After Mumbai and Bengaluru, Guwahati has become the third city of the country to get digital cable television network as the cable network has decided to fight back the DTH service providers.

President of Assam Cable Communications (ACC) Sanjib Narayan told newspersons last night that with the launching of digital cable TV in collaboration with Scientific Atlanta, viewers would be able to enjoy better picture clarity and sound.

''Digital Cable will open up a world of entertainment through more than 250 satellite channels, 20 FM channels and 10 exclusive local channels. It will have 48 online games, more than what Tata Sky and other DTH service providers are presently offering to viewers,'' he said, adding, ''We will customise our services by catering to the needs of the people of the state.'' The subscribers will be given set top boxes and the Cisco-made boxes will control the quality.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi last night formally inaugurated Digital Cable TV, the first of its kind in the Eastern region, at a function organised by the Assam Cable Communications (ACC).

Lauding the efforts of ACC for launching Digital Cable TV, Gogoi hoped that it would revolutionise the cable network in Assam by bringing superior picture and sound quality to viewers at affordable rates.

Extending his government's help and support towards the endeavour of ACC towards digitalising cable TV in Assam, Gogoi said, ''Our government wants entrepreneurship to grow and flourish, as it can help in easing the unemployment problem. It will help those who endeavour to create entrepreneurship and vistas of employment opportunities for the people of the state.''

He assured that the government would protect the rights of the cable operators and ensure that they are not harassed at any cost.

Echoing the Chief Minister's sentiments, state Minister for IT Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said ACC has exemplified that local youths can excel in whatever they do and that, without any government help.

''The members of ACC have shown that they can stand on their own feet sans government patronage. And this surely would inspire and motivate the youths of our state,'' he said.

He disclosed that the government would digitalise the Assam Secretariat by 2010. ''Our government will fully digitalise the Secretariat through the use of Internet and computers to cut down the number of files drastically and expedite the government machinery,'' he said.

President of Cable Operators Federation of India Rup Sharma requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter with the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on the matter of fixation of rates by pay channels.
She also rued the hiking of price by the pay sports channels in matches featuring the Indian cricket team. ''When the pay channels hike prices during cricket matches involving the Indian team, Doordarshan must step in and bring those matches to the viewers free of cost,'' she added.
