2012 Ssangyong Korando C200 Diesel Plug-In Hybrid

With the Indian debut of Mahindra W201 World SUV just around the corner, Mahindra owned Ssangyong being a direct competitor doesn’t make too much sense. What else make sense you may ask and Mahindra says Electric Vehicles. No, we aren’t talking Reva here but South Korean SUV maker Ssangyong, which is now owned by Indian automaker Mahindra.

Mahindra plans to put the Korando C200 Crossover on a hybrid diet, in a bid to capture the hybrid vehicle space which is looking more attractive than ever before with the Indian government doling out subsidies and also the fact being that fuel prices continue their steady march upwards. Our environment minister Jairam Ramesh, for one might love this Crossover.

The Ssangyong Korando C200 Diesel Plug-In Hybrid, which Mahindra plans to launch in India during 2012, will feature an all electric powerplant for propulsion. The Korando Hybrid’s electric motor will pump out 105 Bhp and will give the Korando Crossover a range of 60 kilometers solely on electric power.

Top speed is an impressive 150 kph which is more than adequate with a 16 kWh lithium ion battery taking 5 hours for a full charge. This, with all the bells and whistles, just like a conventional Crossover makes the Korando Crossover Diesel Hybrid a very promising proposition which could be one of the first diesel plug-in Hybrid’s to hit the Indian market.

Now, coming to the other conventional engine option, the 2012 Korando C200 Diesel Plug-In Hybrid will feature a Euro 5 compliant, two liter diesel engine producing 170 Bhp. This diesel engine, along with the electric motor will not just make the Korando C200 very frugal but will also result in very low emissions.

Now what remains to be seen is how well Mahindra manages to price the 2012 Korando C200 Diesel Plug-In Hybrid in India. A price that is somewhere close to INR 20-22 Lakhs could see the Korando C200 flying off showroom shelves as electricity remains a whole lot cheaper than petrol and diesel and also the fact that the Korando C200 in all electric mode has a very reasonable range to be used as a city car.
