Help  About Mobile Number Portability and Unique Porting Code
Advertisement
#1
As all we know the Mobile Number Portability also known as MNP is rolling out in country. Initially the MNP is available in Haryana and soon it will be available around the country step by step. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a facility allows users to change mobile operator without changing the number and it is applicable for porting between mobile operators only, in the same telecom Circle. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), customers can port-into another operator only if he/she has been with that operator for at least 90 days.

To change the operator, user has to raise Port-In request to actually get into this process. To make a request, user have to first get the UPC (Unique Porting Code) by sending SMS of PORT <your Mobile Number> to 1900.A Unique Porting Code consisting of 8 characters of which the first two shall be alphabets that denote the service provider code and service area code which have been specified by the Authority. For example: TD for Tata Teleservices Ltd in Delhi service area and the remaining 6 characters shall contain 1 to 9, A-N & P-Z only.

Unique Porting Code (UPC) is valid for 15 days only. After that, user has to request another Unique Porting Code to change the operator.

In some cases, user cannot receive the Unique Porting Code (UPC) if,

* Wrong UPC has been quoted in the form against the one provided in the SMS.
* Unpaid bill on existing post-paid mobile number.
* Pending request for change of ownership of the concerned Mobile Number.
* The mobile number is under contractual obligation.
* 90 Days has not lapsed since number activation.
* 90 Days has not lapsed since last Porting Request from the same Mobile Number.
* If user applied for inter-Circle porting.
* The existing mobile number has a pending legal case.

After making Mobile Number Portability Request to the respective operator, user has to submit necessary documents like proof of identity and residential proof again to respective operator. After submitting necessary documents along with Unique Porting Code (UPC),Copy of last bill paid to current service provider (in case of postpay customer) and porting fee of Rs.19, user will get a SIM card from the newoperator.

Maximum time to complete the process of MNP is 7 days as per process mandated by DoT. . For 2-hours during this period, termed as ‘no service period’, your mobile service will not be active on any SIM. After successful completion of this process, user will get SMS from the newoperator informing you about port-in date and time after which you can use your existing number on new SIM.

Yes.
Even if you have balance amount with the present operator, you will lose that amount when you are changing(carry forward balance amount is not allowed). So, it is better to use the talk-time and then change the operator.

You will come to know when you use the code (if the code is expired, then they may ask you to get a new code).
Incase you forget to use the code wthin the time limit, you can repeat the process again and get another code. (They demand that once you recieve the UPC, you should use it at the earliest..)
