New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) DTH major Airtel digital TV today said it has enabled all its high definition and HD recorder set top boxes (STBs) to show standard definition channels with improved quality.

Customers can view all their favourite programmes with enhanced contrast with sharper, brighter and more vivid picture quality. This feature is available at no extra charge for all Airtel digital TV HD, HD Recorder customers, Airtel digital TV said in a statement.

HD transmissions offer better picture and sound quality compared to standard definition (SD) transmission. HD set-top boxes, which offer wide-angle viewing, are considered particularly suitable for watching sporting events and action movies.

Recently, Reliance Digital TV had said it will offer over 250 channels in high definition to its subscribers.

We believe that these initiatives will help build category awareness in the HD market that has an increasing number of customers trying out various options that can help enhance their Standard Definition viewing experience," Bharti Airtel Chief Marketing Officer (Airtel digital TV) Sugato Banerji said.

Airtel has 5.6 million DTH subscribers as of March 31, 2011, of which about five per cent are HD consumers. Its HD set top box is available to consumers at Rs 3,190 and HD box with a digital video recorder (DVR) is priced at Rs 3,990, while standard definition (SD) box for Rs 1,590.

To avail the facility, customers need to have a HD TV, Airtel digital TV (HD) or airtel digital TV (HD) Recorder set top box as well as a HDMI cable to connect the set top box (STB) with the TV, it said.

However, for the true HD experience, consumers will have to pay for the HD channel bouquet, about 10 of which are currently available like Discovery, Nat Geo and some Star channels.

G8 News..... Guys See Below...
Airtel has announced that it has enabled all its high definition (HD) and HD recorder set top boxes to show standard definition channels with an improved quality of 1080i. Users can now view all their content with enhanced contrast and sharper picture quality.

Airtel has decided not to charge its customers for this upgrade and all users of Airtel Digital TV HD and HD recorder will be upgraded.

Recently Reliance Big TV started offering more than 250 channels up-scaled in high definition to its subscribers. Other HD broadcasters like Tata Sky HD do not offer scaled-up channels and only offer 10 channels in full HD.

According to Sugato Banerji, CMO-Airtel digital TV, Bharti Airtel, "We believe that these initiatives will help build category awareness in the HD market that has an increasing number of customers trying out various options that can help enhance their Standard Definition viewing experience. The journey towards True High Definition has but just begun for the Indian DTH customer and will get further impetus with the entire production, storage and distribution chain moving to HD over the next few years."

Acknowledging the growing market of HDTV sets with plummeting prices, DTH operator Airtel has announced that it will soon upscale all the channels of its DTH (Direct-To-Home) service to 1080i or HD display resolution. The advantage of this would be better image quality of those same signals on HDTVs, and the lingering issue of bad aspect ratio should also be taken care of.

Airtel has promised an enhanced contrast ratio with sharper, brighter and more vivid picture quality on over 250 of the channels offered by their service, and the best thing is that this comes at no extra charge for all Airtel digital TV HD and HD Recorder customers. Better sound quality will be offered when compared to existing Standard Definition (SD) transmission.

Sugato Banerji, Chief Marketing Officer (Airtel digital TV), Bharti Airtel said, "We believe that these initiatives will help build category awareness in the HD market that has an increasing number of customers trying out various options that can help enhance their Standard Definition viewing experience".

While the experience would be truly better than SD, we must warn you against expecting anything close to what you get while watching true HD channels such as Discovery, Nat Geo or some sports channels.
