Help Cable war threatens World Cup blackout

MANGALORE: The tug of war going on between ESPN Star Sports network and the local cable operators regarding annual subscription fees is likely to deny sports lovers, connected to cable network, a chance to watch World Cup 2011.

The spat started in November when the contract between V4 Media and ESPN ended. While V4 claims that ESPN is demanding a steep hike of 40% of the existing subscription fee from November, the latter debunks it saying the cable operator is fudging the numbers of actual subscription base and, fee is not the actual issue.

V4 Media partner Harish Karkera told TOI that it was illogical of them to demand 40% hike from the existing Rs 13 lakh as they have capped the subscription fee at Rs 230 from the past eight years. He also claimed that the subscriber base has not grown due to existing subscribers switching over to DTH.

Karkera also noted that with new cricket channels coming up and cornering rights for majority of the cricket matches, barring the World Cup, they were in a Catch-22 situation. "ESPN does not have rights to cricket matches barring World Cup, so they have to reduce the fee, instead they are pressurizing us with the World Cup bogey," he said adding that currently they are not giving ESPN as there were no interesting matches. "How many channels are we supposed to subscribe and how many companies are we supposed to pay," he argued.

The ESPN officials claim that V4 violated TRAI clause that public notice through newspapers should be issued 21 days before cutting off services. Karkera argues they have not disconnected, but not feeding ESPN bouquet as there were no good programmes. "We are still negotiating. They are agreeing to our terms. They have raised invoices for November and doing it for December. We wanted to give them back the IRD box and they are not accepting," he added.

ESPN officials say content-wise the channel has rich content this year like Ashes, football etc."As V4 has a monopoly they are trying to bulldoze us. If we budge, others may follow suit," the official argued. If neither of them budges, viewers may have to opt for DTH option and avoid becoming a casualty of this war.
