Help DTH operators chase railways, buses, ships

People travelling between Jaipur and New Delhi have been able to see their favourite TV programmes while on the move for the past two weeks, thanks to a new service introduced by direct-to-home (DTH) operator Airtel Digital in Volvo inter-city buses.

“It’s a niche segment, one which has tremendous growth potential,” said Sugato Banerji, chief marketing officer, DTH services, Bharti Airtel Ltd. “Television is all about lifestyle, and with people travelling much more than before, it makes sense to offer consumers services in the category.”

Airtel is the second firm to offer such services, following Dish TV, which ventured into the segment three years ago.

Dish TV, in partnership with auto designer Dilip Chhabria, adds its satellite TV services to vanity vans of Bollywood actors, and sports utility vehicles for politicians and business honchos.

“Along with people, even television is on the move today,” said Salil Kapoor, chief operating officer, Dish TV. “Stock markets, current affairs, entertainment, everything has to be consumed in real time.”

The DTH company provides content to 15 Kingfisher Airlines Ltd aircraft, private yachts, naval ships and two luxury trains—the Palace on Wheels and the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels.

“We are in talks with the Indian Railways to provide (satellite TV) services for Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express,” Kapoor said, adding that his firm is seeing increased demand from individuals to install DTH TV on their personal vehicles.

The DTH providers install a satellite tracker which revolves to receive signals. It costs Rs.1.5-2.5 lakh to install the antenna in vehicles, aircraft or ships. Other costs include TV screens, wiring and set-top boxes. The DTH mobile model is based on monthly subscriptions.

Kapoor said while there has been a 40-50% growth in the business in the past three years, the revenue currently earned is not significant.

According to Banerji, offering in-transport services is a great way to get the branding across to more viewers.
