PUNE: The district entertainment tax department has collected Rs 58.76 crore revenue in the financial year 2010-11. After failing to meet revenue targets for the previous two years, the department in 2010-11 succeeded in exceeding the revenue target of Rs 58 crore.
Among the major contributors, the ( direct to home) DTH services registered an increase of Rs 3 crore as compared to last year's tax collection figures.
The annual tax revenue for 2010-11 increased by around 20 per cent as compared to last year's earnings. Last year, the department's annual tax collection was Rs 48.94 crore, as against the target of Rs 50.40 crore. In year 2009-10, the department registered a tax collection of Rs 39 crore against the annual target of Rs 42 crore. It is for the first time in 2010-11, that the department's annual revenue exceeded the Rs 50 crore mark.
An official from the department said, "There are around 15 major categories listed for the entertainment tax. Cinema halls, DTH services and cable services have topped the list with contributions. Cinema halls contributed a tax of Rs 22.91 crore, DTH (22.04 crore) and cable services (9.64 crore)."
According to the department, there are around 128 registered establishments under movie entertainment, including theatres, multiplexes, video homes and touring talkies.
The DTH and cable connections have registered an increase, resulting in an incline in the tax collection. An official said that according to estimate, the total number of DTH and cable connection registered with the department are around 5 lakh.
"Among the other major contributors are the taxes collected from horse races, which contributed around Rs. 2.34 crore to the overall revenue," said an official.
The official further added that Video/DVD parlours in the district have contributed to a revenue of Rs 23.51 lakh, video games have brought in Rs 36.02 lakh revenue, pool games Rs 22.76 lakh and water parks Rs 20.45 lakh. There are around 60 video/DVD parlours, seven water parks and 31 pool game parlours in the district.
