Help Govt not to ban offensive TV programmes

#1
NEW DELHI: The Government has once again denied any proposal to ban programmes that do not adhere to the Programme and Advertisement Codes but reiterated that action will continue to be taken whenever any violation is brought to its notice.

Parliament was informed by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting C M Jatua that action was initiated in a total of 43 cases of violation of the Codes in the years 2008 to 2010.

Similarly, the Press Council of India initiated action in 26 cases relating to violation of Journalistic Conduct between April 2007 and October 2010 in the print media, a majority of which had been resolved to the satisfaction of both the complainant and the offender.

The Press Council of India takes action under Section 13(2)(b) of the PCI Act 1978, while the action in case of private TV channels is taken under the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act 1995.

The Council has also drawn up separate codes for coverage of communal disturbances, terrorism, AIDS, financial journalism and election reporting.
