Bangalore: Samsung announced that it has reached an agreement with Polycom, global leader in Unified Solutions to develop high definition videoconferencing applications on Samsung's new Andriod based Galaxy Tab computer. Polycom solutions also includes features that are attractive for mobile clients which are into network solutions and enable users to participate both in point-to-point and group conversations while enjoying excellent HD quality and functionality.

"Video communications is a critical UC application within mobile platforms, and the combination of high quality and open interoperability is critical to driving customer value," said Hosoo Lee, executive vice president and head of the Samsung Media Solution Centre. "We are partnering with Polycom due to its unparalleled HD video and voice quality, to bring a best in class, standards based video communications experience to a wide range of UC applications and devices, including the new Samsung Galaxy tablets and Samsung smartphones."

Polycom announced that the videoconferencing is based on Scalable Video Coding (SVC) which helps combine videoconferencing with other collaboration technologies across a variety of platforms running on standards based software. Microsoft has announced that it will adopt the SVC technology to further its desktop unified communications offerings. "Millions of users will have the ability to launch high definition voice and video straight from a desktop integrated with Polycom unified communications," Joseph Burton, Polycom's chief technology and strategy officer.

Samsung devices will deliver low-latency, high-resolution video experiences and network resiliency. It will combine a directory and chat capability allowing Samsung mobile device users to easily find each other and connect. Polycom has demonstrated the videoconferencing capability on the Galaxy Tab, but the Samsung tablet will not include that technology when it first goes on sale later this week through some of the nation's wireless carriers, a Polycom official said Monday.

Polycom also said it has been working with VoIP communications vendor BroadSoft on a cloud based service for high definition video and voice applications that service providers are expected to sell to businesses around the globe. Polycom competes with a number of other companies in the videoconferencing market, but its biggest threat could be from Cisco Systems, which recently purchased Tandberg for videoconferencing capabilities.
