South Africa's powerful opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs has had his national contract terminated, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have confirmed.
“It has been decided that this is the best way forward for both parties,” CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said in a statement.
“On behalf of CSA I would like to wish Herschelle all the best for his future and to thank him for the contribution he has made to the successes of the Proteas over an extended period of time.
“Herschelle represented our country for 14 years with distinction and I don’t think any cricket lover will ever forget the magnificent innings he played in the famous 438 game against Australia.
“Because of the sensitivity of the matter as well as the confidentiality agreements signed between the parties, the matter is now closed and there will be no further comments from the parties concerned."
Gibbs played 90 Tests, 248 One-Day Internationals and 23 Twenty20 Internationals for his country, hitting 175 as South Africa beat Australia in the decisive fifth ODI in Johannesburg in 2006 as they chased down 438 to win in one of the most remarkable matches of the modern era.
He also scored 14 Test centuries and 20 other ODI centuries and the decision to terminate his contract comes soon after his the publishing of his autobiography, which was openly critical of CSA management, including former coach Mickey Arthur and captain Graeme Smith.
