Industrialist Ratan Tata has invoked the right to life in his battle against the Nira Radia tape leaks.

He filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Monday, urging that people who released confidential tapes relating to the 2G scandal be held responsible for their action. He is apprehensive that personal conversations, with no connection with the scandal, may be made public.

The Hindu reports:

Mr. Tata may invoke Article 32 of the Constitution, claiming that his right to life, which includes right to privacy, has been breached by the leak of these tapes…

Some of the conversations between Mr. Tata and Ms. Radia, whose PR firms have been engaged by the group, relate to personal details that could no way be part of investigation, Mr. Tata is expected to argue in the petition.

NDTV reports:

Speaking to Shekhar Gupta on NDTV’s Walk the Talk programme, Ratan Tata had recently said that the government agencies have special powers to invade people’s privacy, but with that special power, come special responsibilities.

He also asserted that the Tata Group never subverted any policy through Radia. “Never once have we done something to exploit a policy issue, never once we used her (Radia) to make payments or to seek favours,” he said, adding that the government should take over the tapes and restrain the media from indulging in character assassination.

Transcripts of several conversations made it to the media in the wake of the 2G spectrum scandal, which by the government auditor’s reckoning cost the country Rs 1.76 lakh crore.
