Bangalore: Apple is coming up with a new version of iPad tablet which will be "thinner and lighter" and will be having a built-in front-facing camera and faster processor.
The new version of the iPad will have a camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing, the Wall Street Journal quoted people familiar with the matter as saying.
The new version will also feature more memory and will have a more powerful graphics processor. The gadget would initially be available through carriers Verizon Wireless and AT&T in the U.S.
According to the Wall Street Journal report, the one feature in the new iPad that may "disappoint" consumers will be the lack of significant improvement in the resolution of the device's display. The new iPad could debut in the next couple of months, the report added.
The people familiar with the matter said that the new iPad is being assembled by Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, better known by its trade name Foxconn.
Since iPad's debut in April last year, Apple has sold 14.8 million units of the device. The tablet contributed $4.6 billion in sales, or 17 percent of the company's overall revenue in Apple's December quarter. It is estimated that Apple will sell over 27-30 million iPads in 2011.
In a bid to tap the growing market for tablets, other players like Samsung, Motorola, RIM and Dell are also launching their own tablet computers. Dell plans to release a 10-inch tablet that runs on Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system later this year, while Samsung has already launched its Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch tablet.
