Japan's Toyota said on Wednesday it had received strong advance orders in India for the Etios small car, which it has designed especially for the subcontinent's booming auto market.

The 1.5-litre sedan, priced from Rs. 496,000 ($10,945), is Toyota's first low-priced small passenger model put on the Indian market. It is manufactured at a new plant in Bangalore that employs over 2,000 workers. Before the car is rolled out and hits dealerships, advance orders have already reached 12,000 units since December 1, or about 17 percent of the annual target of 70,000, said the car maker.

"The orders went beyond my expectations," Toyota's chief engineer Yoshinori Noritake told reporters, standing next to a pre-production prototype of the Etios at the company's Tokyo headquarters."We have already received some 12,000 orders for the first two weeks, even before production begins later this month," another Toyota official said, adding that deliveries are expected to start early next year.

Toyota, the world's largest automaker, plans to release a hatchback version of the Etios, with an engine displacement of 1.2 litres, in April, targeting combined annual sales for the two models at 70,000 units. The company is considering exporting the Etios to other countries from India, possibly including developed countries, in future, said Noritake. The Indian auto market -- Asia's third-largest after China and Japan -- is projected to triple in size over the next decade to six million cars a year from the current two million, according to industry estimates.

Toyota has so far had a marginal 3.0 percent share of the Indian auto market, while Maruti Suzuki has enjoyed a 45.8 percent share, and South Korea's Hyundai secured a 15.9 percent share last year.

Toyota bets on Etios

Calcutta: Toyota Motor is pinning high hopes on its latest offering — the Etios — to double sales in 2011.

While the Etios sedan had already been launched, the Etios Liva, a hatchback, will be rolled out next year.

"We are closing 2010 with sales of 74,000 units and planning to hit the 1,50,000-mark in 2011, of which 70,000 will be of the Etios sedan and the Liva hatchback," said Koji Nagata, executive managing coordinator and director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), during the launch of the sedan here.

The increase in sales will raise Toyota's share in the passenger car segment to 37 per cent from 11 per cent now. Having sold 54,000 vehicles in 2009, Toyota has witnessed a 40 per cent growth in sales this year. Both the Etios sedan and the hatchback will be produced at TKM's new plant in Bidadi near Bangalore, which has an annual production capacity of 70,000 units.

"The plant, set up at an investment of Rs 3,200 crore, will produce only the Etios vehicles. It is currently on a single shift production and will start double shift next year," said Nagata.

The company's first plant, which was set up in 1997 at an investment of Rs 1,700 crore, has a capacity of 80,000 vehicles. It manufactures the Innova, the Altis and the Fortuner. The company also sells the Land Cruiser 2000, the LC Prado, the hybrid Prius and the sedan Camry.

The Etios Liva hatchback, which was showcased here along with the sedan, is due for launch in April next year. While the sedan has received a nationwide booking of 13,000 units, of which 300 units are from Bengal, the hatchback bookings will open next year.
