Home-made Solar Power 240 Volts AC Inverter for running TV+DTH during power failure

Hi friends,
In a metro city, there are no power cuts at all except for rare emergencies. But when I am at my native place in South India, often there is routine load-shedding and power outages.

To overcome this problem, I have made an inverter circuit which draws 9.4 volts from 2 Solar Panels and drives a Transformer giving 240 Volts AC power. The direct output from a single solar panel can be used to charge a mobile phone / USB-charging device directly. It has a Nokia-type pin provision too.

This works as long as there is bright sunlight falling on the panels. The output from the inverter is enough for a 40Watts tubelight, a table-fan, a small tv or a laptop. Also if we add one more panel and make few changes in the circuit, a car battery of 12V can be charged and used to drive the transformer to power devices when there is no sunlight.

Hello Mr.AB,
The 2 Solar Panels together cost me Rs2000, 3 Panels will be at Rs3000.
General circuit board + electronic components cost me around Rs200.
9 volts Transformer I removed from old broken Radio at home. Pin-adapters etc I got free with mobile 4 years back.
My version is a "battery-less" one which works with bright sunlight from 10am to 4pm .
I guess a New car battery comes within Rs2000 to Rs3000 in Western India.

The number of hours it works increases with the A-H (Ampere-Hour) rating of the battery. So using a 6A-H car battery, a load (appliance) needing 1Ampere current will work for 6 hours continuously.
Using a good brand like "Exide" or "Amaron" car battery is recommended for better performance.

I will post a detailed 12 Volt circuit with battery recharging and protection circuit for DIY (Do-It-Yourself) enthusiasts here soon.

That will be so nice of you Mr.Vinay.

After seeing your post; i think it will be better to go for Solar Inverter rather the electric type. It will be a one time investment and i think the panels have a minimum 5 year lifetime?? (pls correct me if am wrong).
Also, i believe it can be used at least for One room/Hall during summer time, saving quite a bit electric bills???

Thanks again..

Mr.AB, I see the lifetime of a Solar Panel is between 10 years to 25 years under normal operating conditions. refer the Wikipedia screenshot below.

Yes normal loads in one or two rooms for lighting and small fans are ok.
Also Day-light White LEDs can be used in clusters for more efficiency and longer duration of lighting (without needing conversion to 240 Volts).

Mr.AB, this link on eBay India site says a lifespan of 25 years for 12Volts Solar Panel:
