How to Set Up a Wireless Home Network?
#1

Do you remember the old fashioned Cordless phones that could be carried from here to there inside our houses? Remember the ease that they provided, the ease of not being glued to a place while on the phone. Don’t you think it will be nice if we can do the same with the internet connection in our houses? Here is a step by step guide to set up a wireless home network inside your house that will grant you the ability to access the internet from anywhere inside your house, access your printers from every nook and corner of your house and share data with all the computers in your house, making your overall computing experience more enjoyable and relaxing.

Just as we gather the ingredients before making any dish, we need to gather the following to start with the work of setting up a home wireless network- a wireless router, a wireless adapter, installation CD’s of all the drivers for all your different machines and decide the configuration and names to the different computers. While buying a new wireless router it is advisable to buy the one with a Windows logo. In most of the modern day computers, the wireless capabilities are built-in. This eliminates the need of buying a new wireless adapter.

Steps to set up a Home Wireless Network

The actual steps of the procedure are as follows:
Install the one-step installation CD that came along with your router, plug in your router into a power source and connect one of the four ports(except the one labeled internet) to your computer.
The next step shall be the configuration of our router so that not everyone can connect to it but only your machines. This can be done by visiting a special website address that is made up of numbers and came along with your router. Here, the settings of the router can be changed by logging in with the user name and password that came along with your router. This page looks different for different routers but the settings to be configured are the same. Now, set the wireless network mode to Mixed. Now, on the wireless security page, set the security mode to WEP. This is the type of encryption that will be used. Next, enter a pass phrase and click “Generate.” The Key fields will be filled in with a password. Either ‘copy and paste’ these passwords to a text file on your computer or write it down on a piece of paper that you’ll keep near the router. Anyone who wants to connect to your router will need this password. Be sure to save these settings. Lastly make sure that not any of the computers connecting to your router can change its default password and make you an outsider. For doing this go to the administration page and set the password to something that only you would know, do not forget to write this password somewhere as this will be your permit to enter the settings page of your router every time.
For the first wireless connection to your router, first unplug the router from your computer. Now, start the wireless service on your computer and if all goes right your router’s name should appear on the drop down list. From the list select your router and enter one of the passwords (which had been issued for connecting to the router not the administrative password) and hopefully you will find yourself connected to your home network.
Now, the final step and probably the easiest one as well is to insert the internet cable on the port labeled Internet or WAN (one which we have not touched till now) and give it some time to connect. Now go back to the settings page and if you see an IP address there except 000.000.000.000 then you were successful and can now start surfing the web through your computer from anywhere inside your house.

There, are a few things that you should know when you are buying a router, that is, the maximum number of wireless devices that it supports, the number of telnet ports and the maximum speed.
