New Delhi: The information and broadcasting (I&B) ministry has sent closure notices to several TV channel applicants, if they don't submit requisite information by May 15.
It is learnt that the applicants were sent several reminders, but have failed to make requisite disclosures to the government. The closure notice sent says if the documents and/or information is not received on or before May 15, "the proposals will be closed without further notice."
The proposals pertain to uplinking permission for 15 television channels and downlinking for three.
The applicants include Greycells 18 Media Pvt Ltd, a venture between Educomp and Newswire 18. Greycells had proposed to launch a channel called Topper Junior and applied for uplinking permission.
Hamara Samay TV News Pvt Ltd is another applicant waiting for an uplinking nod. The company wants to launch an Islamic social welfare channel, Alif TV. The company had initially planned to launch it in 2007. Lemon TV, a music channel from Hamara Samay Group, is already being aired.
American channel Fox News is also in the queue for beaming into Indian cable and satellite TV homes. The group's Fox Crime and Fox History and Entertainment are already available to Indian audiences.
PPV Movies and Content Pvt Ltd has sought downlinking permission from the government. Others in the list include Sahara India Commercial Corp Ltd (for Sahara Marathi, Sahara Bengali, Sahara Gujarati and Sahara English channels), Independent News Service Pvt Ltd (for India TV Wiz), Entertainment Television Network (for Raj India TV), Prahlad Telefilms (for Career TV), Goldwin Entertainment (for Goldwin TV), Pranav Communications (for Thai TV), Rachna TV (for Bhakthi TV-Kannada), Cogent Media (for True Life), Venus Media (for One News) and Rayudu Vision Media (for RTV 2 and RTV 3 channels).
In all, 436 TV channels are permitted by the government to beam into Indian cable and satellite homes. There's still a long queue of channels waiting for uplinking and downlinking permission.
