NEW DELHI: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a showcause notice to Sony Entertainment Television for showing an obnoxious scene during its reality show Entertainment ke liye kuch bhi karega.

The notice, issued by the I&B Ministry under Section 5 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995, relates to an act showing a person putting a snake through one nostril and taking it out from the other nostril and then putting it in the mouth and taking it out of the nostril. The offending programme was shown on 14 September.

The Ministry notice said the visuals of the programme appear to be offending against good taste. The visuals also appear to inflict cruelty on snakes, and may lead other viewers to try these tricks, and affect young children, and as such they are not suitable for unrestricted public exhibition.

The guideline for Certification of Films under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, stipulates it has to be ensured that scenes showing cruelty to, or abuse of, animals, are not presented needlessly.

The Ministry has said that if a suitable reply is not received, action will be taken ex parte under the Downlinking Guidelines, the terms and conditions of the permission granted and the provisions of Section 20 of the Cable Act.

According to basic conditions of permission for uplinking of an entertainment TV channel from India, channels are bound to follow the Programme Code and Advertising Code.

In the past, four showcause notices have been issued to Sony for violation of the Codes.
