India crushed arch-rivals Pakistan and fellow tournament heavyweights England also won easily on the opening day of the women's cricket World Cup in New South Wales.

Pakistan slumped to 7-25 and were shot out for just 57 in 29 overs in the match at Bowral's Bradman Oval.

Rumeli Dhar (3-7 off eight overs) did the early damage, while Amita Sharma (2-9 off six) and Priyanka Roy (2-13 off two) were the other multiple wicket-takers.

Openers Anagha Deshpande (26) and Anjum Chopra (17 not out) then knocked off the runs in just 10 overs.

In the other group B game at Canberra's Manuka Oval, England's world No.1-ranked batter Claire Taylor scored 101 off 95 balls in her team's total of 5-277.

Taylor struck 10 fours and compiled half-century partnerships with Caroline Atkins (50 off 85 balls), captain Charlotte Edwards (27 not out off 27) and Lydia Greenway (32 not out off 45).

Atkins and Sarah Taylor (38 off 44) got the innings off to a flying start with a stand of 80 off 16.3 overs.

Sri Lanka started their chase with a 48-run opening stand between Dedunu de Silva (27) and Chaman Polgampola (15).

Hiruka Fernando (26) and Suwini de Aldis (37) added 57 for the fourth wicket, but Sri Lanka were unable to get anywhere near the required run rate, reaching 7-177 from their 50 overs.

Pace bowler Laura Marsh (3-32 off 10) and spinner Holly Colvin (1-33 off nine) were the only bowlers to claim wickets, with three batters getting run out.

The opening group A games will be played on Sunday between Australia and New Zealand at North Sydney Oval and West Indies and South Africa in Newcastle.
