India in West Indies 2011

Who will be the new Men in Blue for WI Series 2011?

With six senior players - Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and MS Dhoni - likely to be rested for the upcoming ODI series in West Indies in early June, Team India will need a good number of replacements for the Caribbean challenge. Who are the possible names? Apart from the usual suspects, the IPL too has thrown up a few names the selectors could ponder over. TOI lists those who have thrown their hats into the ring.

MURALI VIJAY:

The first-choice replacement for either opener. Averages only 17.81 from 11 ODIs, though he has fared better in Tests. Is seen as a batsman of promise and should be persisted with.

PAUL VALTHATY:

Hot property right now after a swashbuckling IPL ton and an equally impressive, all-round follow-up performance. Is the man in form, but with no first-class experience to speak of, but will selectors take a gamble? Looks a batsman of pedigree with all the strokes too. His bowling can be handy. If he keeps going in IPL 4 , maybe the lone T20 International in the West Indies could be a good place to blood him.

AMBATI RAYUDU:

Once regarded as one of India's rising batting stars, a series of misadventures culminating with the ICL derailed his career. Now, he seems to have come into his own with Mumbai Indians. Will his time come? Has decent firstclass experience — an average of 42.17 from 63 games — to back his case.

CHETESHWAR PUJARA:

Hasn't exactly set the IPL on fire but we all know his penchant for notching up big hundreds. Gary Kirsten mentioned him as a future India star and he could be a good replacement for Rahul Dravid in the Test team when the time comes. Why not try him out in the ODIs now?

ROHIT SHARMA:

It will be most unfortunate if, like Irfan Pathan, this crazily talented cricketer is lost to Indian cricket. Needs nurturing and the West Indies could be a good place for him to restart.

PARTHIV PATEL:

Has mellowed, matured and now looks the part. Should be firstchoice replacement as wicketkeeper batsman for MS Dhoni if the skipper opts to rest. Needs to silence critics who feel his time has come and gone.

VENUGOPAL RAO:

Another old guard but he's just 29, and has repeatedly shown his flexibility to adapt across all three formats, in all situations. Has seven sixes in IPL 4 , the most along with Valthaty, to lay a claim for a plane ticket to the Caribbean. Is good Test material too once the big guns exit.

DINESH KARTHIK:

One of three wicketkeeper-batsmen in this list. The IPL offers him another opportunity to wriggle his way back into national reckoning.

ROBIN UTHAPPA:

Can open. Can keep wickets. Can bat lower down too. Can blow the opposition to smithereens. Can take the pressure of a big chase. Why isn't he in the team? Only Uthappa knows.

PRAVEEN KUMAR:

Was unfortunate to miss out on the World Cup party but has recovered from injury and his ability to swing the ball both ways is intact, as IPL 4 has shown. He should be an automatic selection.

LAXMIPATHY BALAJI:

Injuries put paid to his international career but though he has cut down on pace, seems to be reviving the accuracy and variety of old in the shorter formats.

IQBAL ABDULLAH:

With Ashwin and Chawla already in the squad, selectors can opt for this impressive left-arm orthodox bowler in case Harbhajan is not there. Abdullah has been really impressive for KKR this season, topping the bowling charts. Was fantastic in the Ranji Trophy too, both with ball and bat.

AMIT MISHRA:

Lost out on ODI reckoning but this leggie has a big heart and good temperament. Can he outshine the others to stake a claim?

ISHANT SHARMA:

Could get a look-in if Ashish Nehra too is unfit or rested, and maybe has done enough to edge past the likes of Siddharth Trivedi.

Can India afford to send a Team to West indies without these 6 regular /senior players - I doubt. That means only Suresh Raina and Viraht Kohli is available from the main list of Indian players. Also T20 match is different ball game and its performance only cannot considered for selection to a International ODI series tour..?

Some senior players to skip ODI series in West Indies: Sources

NEW DELHI: Some of India's senior cricketers, including captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, are likely to skip the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies starting early June.

Already exhausted by a crammed international schedule, the senior players want to take some rest.

A top BCCI source said that it is possible that at least five-six senior players may be rested since India have a hectic international schedule ahead.

While some senior players may skip only the ODI series, others who have injury problems in recent times may opt out of the entire tour of the West Indies where they play one Twenty20 International, five ODIs and three Tests during the tour starting June 4.

Opening batsman Virender Sehwag is likely to miss the entire tour of the West Indies to regain full fitness, while other senior players like Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh may be rested in a phased manner.

It is learnt that some senior players have already written to the BCCI expressing their desire to skip the tour of the West Indies so that they are fit enough for the crucial tours of England and Australia later in the year.

India have a hectic international schedule this year. Immediately after the ongoing Indian Premier League, India will tour the West Indies for five ODIs and three Tests, followed by a long tour of England in July-August.

England will then come to India for a ODI series in November and West Indies will follow for a three-Test and five ODI series. The Indians then travel to Australia for a high-profile series in December-January.

If the senior cricketers are rested, some of the players who have done well in the ongoing IPL like Paul Valthaty of Kings XI Punjab and Ambati Ryudu of Mumbai Indians may get an opportunity.

There is also speculation that Yuvraj Singh, who has been in terrific form and named the player of the tournament in the World Cup, could be named captain in the absence of Dhoni and other senior players.

When contacted, BCCI chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said that he was not aware about senior players wanting to skip the ODI series against the West Indies.

"I am not aware. So, I can't comment," Shetty said. However, BCCI sources said that is almost certain that a few senior players would pull out of the series and they would write to the BCCI in due course of time.

I think this gonna happen on very frequent basis players would give preference playing for IPL franchisee rather than for nation. While touring for National team would always ignored by statement "Very hectic/ Injury/ Rest". Its amazing players feel hectic or tiring schedule while playing for national team dont feel throwing themselves for everything in T20 team of their Franchisee. But we cant help it "Paisa Bolta Hai"

All seniors will be available for selection: BCCI

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Refuting media reports that cricketers are looking for rest after the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Indian cricket board said Monday that all senior players are available for the tour of the West Indies and England.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief administrator Ratnakar Shetty told IANS that the board has no knowledge of players opting out of the series citing the heavy schedule.

'I can tell you that all players, including seniors, are available for selection. We have no information of any player opting out. Everything will be clear at the selection committee meeting on May 10,' said Shetty.

The Indian team is playing non-stop for sometime now and the IPL started April 9, only six days after the World Cup.

The Windies tour starts six days after the May 28 conclusion of the IPL. The series comprising a T20 game, three Tests and five ODIs will last 51 days.

International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat also emphasised the importance of sending a full-strength Indian side to the West Indies as per the commitment to the Future Tours Programme.

Indian ODI squad selection for Windies on May 13

Mumbai, May 4 : The Indian squad for the one-day series and a Twenty20 match against the West Indies in the latter's backyard will be picked on May 13 in Chennai.

"The selection panel (led by Krishnamachari Srikkanth) is to meet at Chennai on May 13 to choose the team," Cricket Board sources told PTI today.

The meeting will be held a day after Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni would have led Chennai Super Kings against the Delhi Daredevils at home.

Super Kings' next fixture is against Kochi Tuskers Kerala, also at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, on May 18.

The Indian squad, which is scheduled to leave for the Caribbean on June 1, will start the tour with a Twenty20 international against the West Indies at the Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain in Trinidad on June 4.

Youngsters to benefit as seniors may be rested for WI tour

Chennai, May 12 (PTI) Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath and paceman Praveen Kumar are expected to get call-ups as the national selectors meet here tomorrow to pick India's ODI squad for tour of West Indies amid indications that a few seniors would be rested.

While Ishant Sharma is tipped to return to the one-day fold, young Ambati Rayudu is also a strong contender for a berth in the squad for the ODI and Twenty20 series against the West Indies beginning from June 4.

Dashing opener Virender Sehwag has been ruled out as he will undergo a shoulder surgery which will keep him out for at least four to six weeks. Sachin Tendulkar and paceman Zaheer Khan are likely to be rested to ensure that they are fresh for the subsequent Test series.

There is also speculation that captain Dhoni may be rested for a few matches of the ODI series. Gautam Gambhir, in that case, could be named the captain.

The selection meeting to be attended by newly-appointed coach Duncan Fletcher will no doubt take note of the performance of some of India's young guns in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

The names of Kings XI Punjab opener Paul Valthaty, Kolkata Knight Riders' batsman Manoj Tiwary and spinner Iqbal Abdulla and Pune Warriors leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who has had an astonishing economy rate of less than six through 10 matches, are likely to come up for discussions.

It is still not clear as to how many seniors will be rested for the shorter version. Whatever be the scenario, Rayudu who has so far scored 349 runs from 10 games with a strike rate of nearly 120 has a good chance to board the flight to Caribbean.

"His (Rayudu) wicketkeeping ability is another advantage for him. With Robin Uthappa not doing well, Rayudu''s case is even more stronger. Whether Dhoni takes rest or not, Rayudu can be considered a second 'keeper in shorter versions as Indian teams over the years have always had a second option while touring the Caribbean," a BCCI source said
