An express train has derailed in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, but no casualties have been reported, police officials said.

Fifteen coaches of the Rajdhani Express travelling between the capital, Delhi, and the city of Guwahati came off the rails in Katihar district.

Officials said train services on this busy route had been disrupted after the incident early on Tuesday.

They said it was not clear what caused the derailment of the train.

Last November, eight coaches of a passenger train in the eastern state of Jharkhand derailed after Maoist rebels blew up a portion of the railway track.

The Indian railway system carries many millions of people daily, but has a poor safety record.

14 Rajdhani coaches derail, 11 hurt

BHAGALPUR/GUWAHATI: Passengers of a Dibrugarh-bound Rajdhani Express had a miraculous escape on Tuesday as its 14 coaches derailed after the driver applied emergency brake on hearing a deafening sound on the track near Amba Halt, 240 km from Patna. Eleven passengers got minor injuries.

Most of the passengers were fast asleep and jolted off the berths when the mishap took place around 6.30 am between Kharak and Naugachhia stations in Bihar's Bhagalpur district. In New Delhi, the railway ministry suspected sabotage in the derailment of 14 coaches. "We suspect it to be a case of sabotage. Two metres of rail line is missing. Forensic experts are reaching the spot. Details will be known only after the inquiry," a senior railway official said.

East Central Railway officials too did not rule out the possibility of sabotage. "Eastern region commissioner of railway safety RP Yadav will be in Naugachhia and Katihar on May 26 and 27 to probe the incident," ECR's chief public relations officer Dilip Kumar told TOI.

However, Katihar superintendent of railway police Prem Lata denied any sabotage after a police team led by Naugachhia DSP made an on-the-spot inquiry. "The derailment was caused due to the poor maintenance of the track, which was opened for traffic only a couple of months back," she said. Police also denied involvement of Maoists.

"We heard a thud as the train suddenly screeched to halt, and jumped off the rails," Kanta Agrawal, a passenger, said. Another passenger Ramesh Kumar was all praise for driver K Hassan whose "presence of mind averted a major mishap."

About 940 passengers were taken to Katihar by a special train where they were served lunch. Around 12 noon, another AC train with all these passengers left for Dibrugarh.

Sources said traffic on the Down line, which had the track damaged in a stretch of 300 metres due to the derailment, would be restored by Wednesday morning. For now, both Up and Down trains on the Katihar-Barauni section are being run on the Up line. The derailment hit railway services of the Northeast Frontier Railway.
