New Delhi: Taking advantage of the paucity of quality content on television and a shift in urban viewership towards foreign lifestyle programming, several large international broadcasting houses are set to bring in a slew of international channels to India soon.

The new channels can be broadly classified into two categories –– lifestyle and news & current affairs. BBC, Discovery and Fox will bring channels on lifestyle, while media houses from Canada, the US, the UK, France and Japan will come up with news and current affairs channels. genre. In the next six months, over a dozen international channels including BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, BBC HD, Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Kids, and the Millitary Channel are expected to go on air . These will follow the recently launched channels from Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Network and Discovery which will add Fox Crime, FX, Discovery Turbo, Discovery Science and Discovery HD to their existing protfolios.

“The growth witnessed in the Hindi general entertainment space on television is gradually hitting a plateau whereas the English non-fiction and fiction genres have been growing in double digits and that is why international broadcasters are eyeing India foray,” says a senior media consultant with a leading consultancy firm.

According to analysts, the lifestyle programming genre that includes Discovery, National Geographic and NDTV Goodtimes channels, is attracting over Rs 250-300 crore of advertising revenue annually. The revenue more than double in the last three years. “It is a good time to enter the digital platforms like DTH or IPTV and reach to urban viewership who are looking at differentiated content on television and willing to pay extra for it,” says a senior executive of leading lifestyle channel.

For Discovery, which is in India for more than a decade, the market has now become extremely important as the US-based broadcasting firm Discovery Communications has put its India expansion plan on the fast track. Discovery may soon add another three to four channels to expand its existing bouquet to take its overall offerings to more than 10 channels. Sources said that it has applied for government permission to bring in its popular international brands like Discovery Home & Health, Discovery Kids, and the Millitary Channel among others. This will catapult Discovery India into a select group of half-dozen broadcasting houses in the country having 10 or more channels.

Globally, Discovery is said to be the world leader in the non-fiction TV programming reaching more than 1.5 billion cumulative subscribers across 180 countries and its annual revenues are said to be over $3.5 billion (over Rs 16,000 crore). However, India currently accounts for less than 2% of global sales and this is what the company management in the US is looking to scale up in coming years. Discovery’s India market accounts for 10-12% of its Asia market. According to reports, Discovery Networks Asia clocked $240 million (around Rs 1,200 crore) in revenue with Ebitda of around Rs 450 crore. Japan, India and Australia are the largest markets for Discovery Asia.

More channels under its umbrella in India will lend greater bargaining power to Discovery Communications India when negotiating deals with the advertisers.
