Internet Explorer's market share slips below 50 percent

Microsoft's ( MSFT ) venerable Internet Explorer web browser no longer occupies a majority of the browser market, research firm StatCounter says .

The company reported Wednesday that IE's market share slipped to 49.9 percent in September. It's still the most widely used browser - the second-place program, Mozilla Firefox, had 31.5 percent of the market last month - but its eroding share continues a trend that's been going on for some time.

IE is, by most accounts, slower and more vulnerable to malware attacks than its competitors. Some corporate IT departments direct workers to avoid IE as much as possible - yet many enterprise applications run only on Microsoft's browser.

Firefox has seen its market share climb steadily in recent years; more recently, Google's ( GOOG ) Chrome has emerged as a quick and user-friendly alternative to IE, as well.

Microsoft isn't deaf to the criticism that plagues IE. The company is readying a new version of its browser, IE 9, which will support HTML5 and run web content more adroitly than IE 8 - but it remains to be seen if IE 9 can reverse the market-share declines that Microsoft's browser has suffered.
