Jaguar, Land Rover India launch soon
Advertisement
#1
In the coming days Tata owned Jaguar Land Rover will officially launch its products in India. While Land Rover has been represented in India for many years by sole importer Navnit Motors, the Tata-owned British company will now set up a National Sales Company, which will be manned by a division within Tata Motors.

Jaguar’s range in India will include the XFR sports saloon and XKR sports coupé. Prices are expected to be in the region of Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore. Jaguar will focus on the exclusive end of the luxury car segment to avoid direct competition with locally-assembled premium segment rivals. Cars from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW are substantially cheaper because of taxes on locally-assembled cars being lower than those on completely-built-up imports. Neither Jaguar nor Land Rover plans to assemble cars in India, for the time being, making it impossible to compete on price.

The XFR and XKR will compete with other imports like the BMW M5 and M6 or the Merc E63 AMG and SL. Both cars will be powered by a 503bhp supercharged V8 with direct fuel injection, mated to a six-speed ZF automatic ’box with manual over-ride.

Jaguar will import its flagship, the all new XJ, to India as well. The variant chosen will be in competition with the Merc S500, BMW 750Li and Audi A8, all of which are also imported. Volumes are expected to be miniscule, given the stratospheric pricing of these models but Jaguar wants to take things easy until a strong nation-wide dealer network is in place.

Land Rover will feature the full range in India. This includes the baby and relatively affordable Freelander, the Discovery, Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport. These are available with diesel and petrol options, and the full range is expected to be on offer with prices ranging from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 80 lakh.[Image: 290509jag.jpg]

Sources within Tata Motors say that though the showrooms will have only a limited range of products, customers can import any model from the entire Jaguar or Land Rover range provided they pay the nearly 120 per cent customs duty. Tata also wants to leverage its huge network by providing support to Jag and Land Rover owners with trained personnel in existing Tata workshops. It is going to be a tough task for Jaguar and Land Rover to compete with the established players in the luxury space, but that is something the company well understands.

Despite the pricing and the service issues the iconic brands will draw the attention of the crème de la crème of society that likes to stand out from the crowd.
