Better Net experience:Mr Kuldip Singh (right), Chairman and MD, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, and Mr J. Gopal, Executive Director, at a press conference at the launch of "VDSL Broadband" in Mumbai on Tuesday. - Shashi Ashiwal.

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has said that it has increased the download speed in unlimited broadband plans and launched the VDSL (very high bit-rate digital subscriber line) broadband service.

While the VDSL broadband service will be useful for companies and corporate bodies with very high-speed net connectivity, increasing the download speed of unlimited plans will provide customers better Internet experience – higher speed without additional charges.

The new plans are open for booking; for existing customers the speed upgrade will be carried out progressively in two or three weeks.

MTNL said the download speed has been doubled for ‘unlimited plans' of 256Kbps, 384Kbps and 512 Kbps, while there is an increase in speed of 46 per cent in 752Kbps and 30 per cent in 1Mbps plans. The VDSL service will provide a download speed of up to 20Mbps and an upload speed up of to 6 Mbps within a distance of one km from the exchange equipment. The monthly plan charges are Rs 4,999 with 20GB free download and 200 free calls in the new VDSL Combo plan.

Mr Kuldip Singh, CMD, MTNL, said: “MTNL broadband service is the most popular broadband service in Mumbai and is constantly progressing in term of customer numbers and revenues. We have introduced many customer-friendly plans and in our endeavour to provide best value to customers we are increasing the speed of all unlimited plans. The increased speed will provide customers even better Internet experience at no additional cost. The VDSL service will be useful for companies, media houses and corporates which have larger bandwidth requirement.”
