Mandatory mileage norms from October 1: SIAM
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has announced that from October 1, 2010 onwards all its members will initiate telling the fuel efficiency ratings of all their models openly.

SIAM has named this scheme the voluntary fuel efficiency labeling for vehicles. This labeling scheme will start from 1st October of this year, and is hoped to inform its consumers on the efficiency of the comparative fuel of vehicles belonging to different categories, according to SIAM President Pawan Goenka's statement at the annual convention of the company.

The move will help consumers take the correct decisions regarding the choice of vehicles depending upon their individual needs.

It will further encourage and promote the use of less fuel. Even then, industry is ready to adopt the compulsory fuel efficiency standard. The government has been invited to formally adopt the mandatory requirement.

Indian vehicle producers had by themselves initiated the disclosing of their own vehicle's mileage scheme since last year itself, and it is only now that the government is going to make the process mandatory. The mandatory fuel efficiency standard for auto makers is being enforced under the Energy Conservation Act by the Union Power Ministry.
