INDIAN WELLS: Amelie Mauresmo rallied from 3-1 down in the deciding set to beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Friday.

Two-time major champion Mauresmo won four straight games to move ahead 5-3 against the German, then missed two match points in the next game before serving out the nearly three-hour match. It was her first in a month since she won her 25th career title at the Paris Indoors.

Despite having the game to do well at Indian Wells, Mauresmo has played sparingly in the desert. In four previous visits, she cut short two through illness or injury, including her only visit to the quarterfinals in 2003.

Next up for the former No. 1 will be either Patty Schnyder or Li Na.

Ninth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki continued her good form with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland. Wozniacki's year so far includes one final and three quarterfinals. To reach the fourth round here the Danish teen will have to go through Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, who was leading 7-6 (2), 1-0 when Virginie Razzano of France retired with a back injury.

Shahar Peer of Israel, a quarterfinalist two years ago, ended the winning streak of 10th-seeded Marion Bartoli, last weekend's champion in Monterrey, 1-6, 6-4,. 7-5.

On the men's side, the early results were good for qualifiers with three winning their first matches; Michael Berrer of Germany, Daniel Koellerer of Austria, and Todd Widom of the United States. A wild card, Ryan Sweeting of the United States, also won.
